Note: |
Eugene Higgins: A leading American painter
and etcher of the early twentieth century. Eugene Higgins was mainly self-taught
in the arts. He spent most of his youth in St. Louis in a poor neighborhood,
drawing figures and scenes in his environment. His father, a stonecutter,
introduced him to the art of Michelangelo and other Renaissance masters.
Higgins was also deeply influenced by reproductions in books and magazines
of the art of Millet. |
|
Around 1908 Eugene Higgins traveled to Paris
and studied at both the Academie Julian and at the Ecole des Beaux Arts.
It was here that he first practiced the arts of etching, engraving and
the monotype. Several years later he returned to America and was recognized
as a leading printmaker. A one man exhibition of his graphic art took
place at the prestigious Corcoran Gallery, Washington, in 1912. |
|
Eugene Higgins was a full member of the National
Academy of Design, the League of American Artists, the National Arts Club,
the American Water Color Society and the Brooklyn Society of Etchers.
During his career his paintings and etchings were exhibited at such major
institutions as the National Academy of Design, the Carnegie Institute,
the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and the Art Institute of Chicago.
Today collections of his etchings and monotypes are found in the British
Museum, London, the Congressional Library, Washington, DC, the New York
Public Library and the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris. |
|
Higgins's great art deals with the lives of
the less fortunate. His both powerful and poetic imagery of the poor forms
a special place in the history of early twentieth century American art.
Like most of his famous works, Evening and Horseman is both simple
and monumental. |
