Paul Cesar Hellue's original lithograph, Edmund Sagot: Estampes & Affiches Illustrees is a superb example of his lithographic poster art. It is printed upon thin, wove paper and with full margins as published by Edmund Sagot, Paris, and printed by Chaix, Rue Bergere No. 20, Paris in 1899. This impression is signed by Paul Cesar Hellue in the stone in the lower right corner of the image. "Edmund Sagot: Estampes & Affiches Illustrees" is both a fine, original example of the French posters from its Golden Age and the graphic art of Paul Hellue. |
Title: | Edmund Sagot: Estampes & Affiches Illustrees |
Artist: | Hellue, Paul Cesar (Vannes, 1859 - Paris, 1927) |
Date: | 1899 |
Medium: | Original Lithographic Poster With Letterpress |
Publisher: | Edmond Sagot, Paris |
Printer: | Chaix, Rue Bergere No. 20, Paris |
Note: | Paul Cesar Hellue: At the turn of the century, Paul Cesar Hellue was unrivaled as the master interpreter of feminine grace and elegance. Mucha, Berthon and others had captured feminine beauty in the decorative Art Nouveau style: Hellue's art moved to a different level where each classic line suggested rather than elaborated. His technique was thoroughly modern, his temperament made him the great successor to the designs of such 18th century masters as Boucher and Watteau. |
Hellue studied art under Gerome at the Ecole Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris. The rigid Academic style of Gerome had little influence upon him, and, by 1885, Helleu had created his first great drypoint engravings and lithographs. Helleu soon gained a strong international following, particularly in Britain and the United States. He was a full member of the Societaire de la Nationale des Beaux-Arts (1893), and of the International Society of Sculptors, Painters and Engravers, London. In 1904, Paul Hellue was decorated by the French Government with the Legion d'honneur.
In 1881 Edmond Sagot opened a shop in Paris dealing in rare and contemporary prints. He rapidly became the most influential fine print dealer of his day. He was also the first art dealer to add illustrated posters to his inventory and his interest in them helped to increase their already growing popularity. In order to advertise his gallery and to promote the artists he published, Sagot commissioned posters during the 1890's from such well known masters as Felix Vallotton, Alexandre Lunois, George Alfred Bottini and, of course, Paul Hellue.
Hellue's Edmund Sagot poster is a triumph of his mature and most graceful technique. Like the large majority of lithographic posters from this time it is not known in what edition it was published. Yet because of its large size and the manner in which posters were originally used, this original poster, like so many others, is now exceedingly scarce. Edmund Sagot: Estampes & Affiches Illustrees is one of the most famous lithographic posters from the turn of the century. In the book cited below, D. E. Wolfe fully illustrates Hellue's poster and discusses its significance. * The full text is provided with the documentation.
