This impressions is signed and inscribed Private Collection by the American artist, Arthur Heintzelman in pencil along the lower margin. |

Note: | Arthur William Heintzelman 'Arthur Heintzelman': A highly esteemed American etcher of the early twentieth century, Arthur William Heintzelman first studied at the Rhode Island School of Design. He then went to Europe for several years and completed his education in Holland, France, Belgium, Spain, England and Scotland. Upon returning to the United States, Heintzelman accepted the position of Head of the Fine Arts Department at the Detroit School of Design for a period of four years. Arthur Heintzelman created his first original etching in 1915. During the following three years he created more than fifty more, but many were to his dissatisfaction and he often destroyed his plates after only two or three impressions. |
After the conclusion of World War One, Arthur Heintzelman returned to Paris on a permanent basis. It was from this point on that his greatest etchings and drypoint engravings were made. Within several years his art was featured in major exhibitions throughout the United States, England and France. Arthur Heintzelman was a full member of the Chicago Society of Etchers, the California Society of Etchers, the American Federation of Arts, the Societe Gravure Originale en Noir and the Associee Societe Nationale des Beaux Arts, in Paris. His original etchings are included in such major museums as the Metropolitan Museum, NY, the Chicago Art Institute, the Los Angeles County Museum, the Bilbliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London.
Arthur William Heintzelman's fame rested almost entirely upon his figure studies and his exquisite portraits. He was equally adept at both miniature etchings and larger studies and devoted most of his energies to these two mediums. One contemporary author wrote, " Arthur W. Heintzelman is one of the few American etchers well known to the British public, but he is even better known in France, and has spent several years in the French capital. There is an unashamed sentiment about Arthur Heintzelman's work which distinguishes it from the shamefaced reserve of some of his contemporaries. He delights in such subjects as a mother and child, and some of his best etchings depict with great tenderness the lines and furrows of old age." * (James Laver, A History of British and American Etching, London, Ernest Benn Limited, 1929, p. 145).
Le Chevrier is one of Arthur Heintzelman's larger drypoint compositions. Probably created on one of his frequent trips to the French countryside it depicts a rather confident looking goat herder with his 'private collection'. Contrasting sharply defined areas of light and shade, Arthur Heintzelman draws our eye into this unforgettable image by suggesting rather than delineating the surrounding area.
