An original color lithograph designed by Wilhelm Heine, Public Bath at Simoda (Shimoda) is one of ninety prints the artist created to illustrate Commodore Perry's famous expedition to Japan in the mid nineteenth century. When the first volume was printed and published by order of the United States Government in 1856, the public was outraged to find within its pages this scene of men and women bathing together. Devoutly Christian politicians and their wives moved swiftly to suppress this offensive work of art and thus today it is estimated that only about one in ten sets of Perrry's Narrative contain this scarce lithograph. Peter Bernhard Wilhelm Heine's Public Bath at Simoda (Shimoda) is a faithful rendition of the interior of a bathhouse in Shimoda, a port at the southern tip of the Izu peninsula in Japan. That this work created such an uproar only serves to illustrate the excessively conservative and religious nature of nineteenth century America. |

Note: | Wilhelm Heine (Peter Bernhard Wilhelm Heine): A nineteenth century German/American artist, Wilhelm Heine studied at Dresden's Royal Academy of Art and in the studio of Julius Hubner. He then completed his artistic education in Paris, for a period of three years. Wilhelm Heine immigrated to the United States in 1849 and set up a studio in New York. In the following year he met the diplomat and archaeologist, Ephraim George Squier (1821-1888), who persuaded the artist to accompany him to Central America. There, Heine not only acted as an illustrator of Squier's archaeological books but as a consular aid, representing the United States government. |
In 1852 Wilhelm Heine was commissioned as the official artist to accompany Commodore Perry's expedition to Japan on board the frigate, Mississippi. Heine's many watercolors and drawings of Japan grew great interest and were exhibited by the Washington Art Association from 1857 to 1859. He also wrote his own account of the voyage, With Perry to Japan: A Memoir, which was published in 1856.
Peter Bernhard Wilhelm Heine next served as the official artist on the Eulenburg Expedition (1860 & 1861), which negotiated a treaty between Japan and Prussia. He then returned to the United States and enlisted in the Union Army. By the end of the Civil War he had achieved the rank of Brigadier General. In 1869, 1870 and 1871 he worked at the American consuls in both Paris and Liverpool. After that date Heine returned to his native Dresden and spent his final years as both an artist and a teacher.
Peter Stephen Duval (France, c.1804 - Philadelphia, 1886): Peter Stephen Duval was trained in Paris as a lithographer and moved to Philadelphia in 1831. He worked for the Childs & Inman firm until 1834, when Cephas G. Childs retired and Duval bought the firm, forming a new company, Lehman and Duval. By 1837, Duval bought out his partner, George Lehman and established his own printing firm. It would become one of the most prominent 19th century lithographic companies in Philadelphia. During the 1840, Duval received several awards from the Franklin Institute for his work in chromolithography, (a means of printing images by using a series of carefully registered tint stones). From about 1852 to 1857, P. S. Duval took on a new partner, Bourquin, the company was then known as, P. S. Duval & Co. and in 1857, his son joined the firm which became known as, P. S. Duval & Son. The firm continued for a few more years under the management of Duval's son.
Peter Duval's Company printed and published advertising, music sheet covers, topograohical views, certificates, maps, book and periodical illustrations, and portraits. During the 1850's and 1860's, however, his firm published a number of important topographical views. For some of the finest examples (such as the Public Bath at Simoda created for the Narrative of Commodore Perry's Famous Expedition to Japan, Duval created early colour views by utilizing a second printing with a tint stone. Needless to say, these original lithographs are both historically and artistically valuable.
