"U.S Iron Clad Steam-Ship 'Roanoke'", is an original lithograph published in 1863. It depicts the final stages of completion of a Civil War steam frigate to that of a triple turretted ironclad. Commissioned by D. T. Valentine, it was created and printed by George Hayward. Between March of 1862 and June of 1863 the steam frigate, US Roanoke, was cut down to her gun deck and reconstructed as an armored warship in the New York City shipyard, Novelty Works. Upon completion the Roanoke was dispatched to Hampton Roads, Virginia, to participate in the blockade of the Confederacy. However, the voyage southward proved that the ship was too cumbersome and heavy for fighting in the open seas (a problem shared by most ironclads of the era) and the Roanoke was therefore employed only in the defense of the blockade, where her six heavy guns acted as a deterrent to the Confederate ironclads. At the end of the Civil War the Roanoke was decommissioned at the New York Navy Yard and retained in reserve. In 1882 she was struck from the list and sold for scrapping in the following year. |

George Hayward’s lithographs provide an impressive historical archive of Manhattan and New York. Such is the case with "U.S Iron Clad Steam-Ship 'Roanoke'", which delineates not only an accurate depiction of a Civil War ironclad in construction but the establishment where it was rebuilt. The Novelty Works was a Manhattan East River shipyard that lay at the end of 12th and 14th Streets. Its first ship (the Novelty) was built in 1826. During the Civil War the Novelty Works received a number of maritime contracts, including building the turret for the first ironclad Monitor for the Navy. They later built or rebuilt several ironclad class vessels in their entirety, including The Roanoke. | |
