George Hawkins & Canaletto, Giovanni Antonio Canal

George Hawkins - Canaletto's Sea View with Buildings In His Majesty's Collection

Sea View with Buildings, 'In His Majesty's Collection'

George Hawkins's original etching and aquatint, "Sea View with Buildings" is based upon a drawing by the great Italian Master, Canaletto 'Giovanni Antonio Canal', housed in the Royal Collection. It is printed upon early 19th century wove paper and with full margins as created by George Hawkins in 1811 for John Chamberlaine's set of original engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools", bearing the text, "Canaletti delt., Hawkins fc, In His Majesty's Collection, published April 17, 1811 by J. Chamberlaine, Scotland Yard" in the lower margin and the plate number "PL. LVIII." in the upper left corner. In order to render the effects of Canaletto's drawing, George Hawkins has extensively employed aquatint and both hard and soft ground etching. The full tonal values of both light and shade are thus finely executed. "Sea View with Buildings" is a fine, original example of the architectural, seascape, and landscape art created by the nineteenth century British artist, George Hawkins and the mid eighteenth century art of Canaletto also known as 'Canaletti'.

Title: Sea View with Buildings, 'In His Majesty's Collection'
Engraver: Hawkins, George (London, active, 1800 -1825)
Designer: Canaletto (Canaletti) 'Giovanni Antonio Canal' (Venice, 1697 - 1768)
Date: 1811
Medium: Original Aquatint and Etching
Publisher: John Chamberlaine, London
Note: George Hawkins: An architectural and landscape aquatint engraver, George Hawkins engraved views both after his contemporaries and after the old masters. He was also the father and first instructor of George Hawkins II (1809-1852), who became very well known for his lithographic views during the 1840's and early 1850's.
Sea View with Buildings, 'In His Majesty's Collection' is a beautiful example of George Hawkins's art. In order to render the effects of Canaletto's drawing he has extensively employed aquatint and both hard and soft ground etching. The full tonal values of both light and shade are thus finely executed.
Canaletto 'Giovanni Antonio Canal': By the mid eighteenth century Canaletto (1697-1768) had established himself as Italy's greatest view-painter and etcher. The prime subject for both his paintings and etchings was, of course, Venice, and through his innovative art it became Europe's most famous city.
In his topographical etchings and paintings, Canaletto set the standard. One scholar writes, "Even in its more mechanical phases his work is much more than a mere factual record; and by his unobtrusive skill in design, and his power of suffusing his work with light and air, he may justly be regarded as one of the precursors of 19th-century landscape painting." * With its brilliant use of light and shade, water and architectural elements, these words clearly apply to Sea View with Buildings, 'In His Majesty's Collection'.
Sea View with Buildings, 'In His Majesty's Collection' (A Landscape View): An original etching and aquatint, "Sea View with Buildings" is based upon a drawing by the great Italian Master, Canaletto 'Giovanni Antonio Canal', housed in England's Royal Collection. In order to render the effects of Canaletto's drawing, George Hawkins has extensively employed aquatint and both hard and soft ground etching. The full tonal values of both light and shade are thus finely executed. It was as created by George Hawkins in 1811 for John Chamberlaine's important set of original engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection entitled, "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools", bearing the text, "Canaletti delt., Hawkins fc, In His Majesty's Collection, published April 17, 1811 by J. Chamberlaine, Scotland Yard" in the lower margin and the plate number "PL. LVIII." in the upper left corner. "Sea View with Buildings" is a fine, original example of the architectural and landscape art of, George Hawkins and the mid eighteenth century art of Canaletto 'Canaletti'.
John Chamberlaine (British, c. 1745 - 1812): In February, 1791, John Chamberlaine was appointed Keeper of Drawings and Medals to the King. As curator to his Majesty's Collection, Chamberlaine's greatest achievement was to publish engravings and etchings based upon these famous old master acquisitions. Between March, 1792 and February, 1800, John Chamberlaine published eighty-four stipple engravings based upon Holbein's portrait drawings. All but four of these engravings were created by Francesco Bartolozzi, who held the title of, 'Historical Engraver to his Majesty'.
In 1796, John Chamberlaine initiated another important set of engravings based upon drawings in the Royal Collection, entitled, "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci". The engravers for this series were Francesco Bartolozzi and his followers. The following year, John Chamberlaine began his final set under the title of, Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection". In the following years this last set was expanded to include engravings based upon the designs of other old masters, such as, Raphael 'Raffaello Santi', Michelangelo di Lodovico Buonaroti, Claude Lorrain, Nicolas Poussin, Leonardo da Vinci, Giovanni Antonio Canal 'Canaletto' and other major artist. For this opus, John Chamberlaine commissioned such leading engravers as Francesco Bartolozzi (1727 - 1815), Luigi Schiavonetti (1765 - 1810), Frederick Christian Lewis (1779 - 1856), Peltro William Tomkins (1760 - 1840) and others to worked upon this project.
The engravings for the 1796 "Imitations of Original Designs by Leonardo da Vinci" and the 1797 Engravings from the "Original Designs of Annibale, Agostino and Ludovico Carracci, in his Majesty's Collection", were both completed in 1812. At this point John Chamberlaine combined the two sets under the general title of "Original Designs of the Most Celebrated Masters of the Bolognese, Roman Florentine and Venetian Schools". Taking eighteen years to complete, the entire series consisted of sixty-six plates, with the exception of a few sets which contained additional plates (not listed in the index), and bearing the publication date of 1795 or 1796. In order to simulate varying drawing methods, the artists used a wide ranging array of printmaking techniques such as stippling, soft ground etching and aquatinting, often employing either separately printed color plates or hand-coloring. As a result, some of the most complex and technically accomplished etchings and engravings of the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries are found within this scarce and monumental collection.
