Jean Baptiste Haussart’s original engraving, "Le Mauvais Riche" (The Wicked Rich), was published in Paris around 1735 for the "Crozat Collection" and is printed upon early 18th century laid paper. Jean Baptiste Haussart, also known as 'Jean Baptiste Haussard' based this original engraving upon a design by Domenico Feti. "Le Mauvais Riche" is a fine, original example of Biblical art of and of early eighteenth century French engraving. The scene depicts a wealthy man at his table, surrounded by the luxuries of life. Servants cater to his every need. In the background to the upper left a quartet of musicians is at work. In stark contrast to the lower left, a beggar appears. This large and impressive work of early 18th century art also has an alternate title, "The Rich Man and Lazarus", and draws its theme from the Biblical parable. |
