Rudolf Hausner: A major Austrian painter, sculptor, and printmaker, Rudolf Hausner studied art at the Academy in Vienna from 1931 to 1936, under Fahringer and Sterrer. Many of his early paintings were confiscated and branded as 'degenerate' by the ruling nazi party in 1938. In 1941, Rudolf Hausner was drafted by the German army and remained a soldier until the war's end in 1945. After the war he returned to Vienna and immersed himself in studies dealing with the unconscious and with the art of Surrealists, particularly that of Max Ernst. Along with Wolfgang Hutter and Anton Lehmden,
Rudolf Hausner founded the Viennese School of Fantastic Realism in 1947. During the 1950's and 1960's this became one of Austria's most important movements and Rudolf Hausner was its most influential artist. During this time Hausner also held principal teaching posts at the academies of Vienna and Hamburg. |

Equally gifted as a painter, lithographer, etcher, silkscreen artist, and sculptor, Rudolf Hausner's complex art is based upon potent symbols and imagery. Primary among these is the constantly recurring image of the first man, Adam, who is part auto-biographical and part archetype. Another compelling image is that of the man or boy in a sailor's cap. Rudolf Hausner claimed that this image symbolized the myth of Odysseus and his epic voyages on the seas. It also, however, is representative of Rudolf Hausner's own boyhood and the integrated relationships of youth and age within the self. As with all of Rudolf Hausner's monumental works of art, the elements within Adam bezuglich (Regarding Adam) demand a lifetime of contemplation and study. |

Rudolf Hausner depicted his own facial features in the portrayal of his Adam, a subject that appears often in his body of work. However, each portrait is idiosyncratic, and a powerful vision within itself, perfectly executed while exploring and mastering the different art mediums. Such works include, Adam, painting (1957), Adam Bezuglich, colour lithograph (1969), Adams wendeltreppe, colour etching (1971), Adam massstablich, painting & tempra (1972), Adam Masstablich II, colour silkscreen (1973), Adam wartet, colour silkscreen (1974), Adam und sein Maschinist, colour serigraph (1974), Adam (Selbsportrat) mixed media painting (1974), Adam rational, watercolour and mixed media (1975), Adam in Bescheidenem Rahmen, colour lithograph (1975), Adam, black and white marble suclpture (1975), Adam suchbild, colour lithograph (1976), Adam real und ideal, mixed media painting (1986), Adam und Anima, bronze sculpture (1977), Adam Selbstdarsteller, colour serigraph (1979), Adam Medial (1983), Adam nach dem Sundenfall, colour lithograph (1988), Adam wohlbehuetet, bronze sculpture (1995), and many other important works of art. The Panorama Museum, Bad Frankenhausen, Germany includes several works by Rudolf Hausner in its permanent collection. |
