Sella Hasse: A fine twentieth century German
painter and etcher, Sella Hasse studied art and printmaking techniques
under Kathe Kollwitz, in Berlin. In the first decade of the twentieth
century she exhibited her art with the Berlin Secessionists, such as Max
Liebermann and Lovis Corinth. In 1910 Sella Hasse moved to the German
city of Wismar. She remained there for the following twenty years, establishing
a strong reputation for her figure studies, portraits and city scenes
and landscapes. Hasse then returned to Berlin where she continued to work
upon and exhibit her fine art. |
|
Today the art of Sella Hasse is included in many major German
collections. The Stadtgeschichtlichen Museum, Wismar, lists over three
hundred works of her art in its permanent collection. |
|
It is in the etchings of Sella Hasse (particularly her earlier
works) where the influence of her great teacher, Kathe Kollowitz, is at
its strongest. In both stylistic and emotional content, Kohlenloschen
im Schnee, bears similarities to Kollwitz's etched art. The deeply
bitten lines are equally sensitive and powerful and the cold, heavy labor
of the coal carriers is brilliantly rendered. |
