Note: | William M. Hart 'William Hart': Born in Scotland, William Hart immigrated with his family to America in 1831 and initially settled in Albany, New York. Largely self-taught, he began his artistic activities by decorating coach panels and windowshades. At the age of eighteen, William Hart set himself up as a portrait painter and traveled in search of commissions. He spent several years in Michigan but returned to Albany in 1845 because of ill health. |
With the financial assistance of a patron, William Hart went abroad in 1849. He spent three years in both England and his native Scotland before returning to Albany in 1852. By this point, William Hart devoted himself almost solely to landscape depictions, including many studies with cattle. Two years later William Hart took a studio in New York City. His landscape paintings, which bear many affinities to the Hudson River School, made him one of America's most popular artists of the late nineteenth century.
William Hart was elected an associate of the National Academy of Design in 1854 and an academician in 1858. He was a founder of the Brooklyn Academy of Design and became its first president in 1865. William M. Hart was also a founding member of the American Watercolor Society and served as president from 1870 to 1872. Today the art of William Hart is included in such major collections as the Smithsonian American Art Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
In 1883 the Art Department of the New England Manufacturers' and Mechanics' Institute, Boston, held a an important exhibition of contemporary American art. Hart's etching, "Naponock (Naponoch) Scenery, Ulster County, New York", was first exhibited at this exposition and is listed in the catalogue under number 362.
