James Duffield Harding’s original lithograph, "Tynemouth, Northumberland" is printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as printed by Hullmandel and published by Charles Tilt , Sketches at Home and Abroad in London in 1836. It is titled, dated and signed in the stone to the lower left, "Tynemouth, Northumberland, July, 1827, J. D. H." This sweeping view of Tynemouth provides a panoramic view of King Edward’s Bay, a small sandy bay enclosed by cliffs and grassy banks. Its beach lies at the foot of the rocky headland known as (Pen Bal Crag), with the lighthouse, and the ruins of Tynemouth Castle and the Benedictine Priory situated on top, as seen here in the background. This historical lithograph is one of only a handful of British views that appeared in James Harding's large and beautiful 1836 publication, Sketches at Home and Abroad. Other English scenes were Chudleigh Rocks, Devon, The Port of London, Hastings, Greenwich, Remains of the Holy Island Cathedral and Endsleigh, Devon. "Tynemouth, Northumberland" is an important and historical record of this site, and a splendid, original example of the lithographic and landscape art created by the British artists, J. D. Harding. |

Note: | James Duffield Harding 'J. D. Harding': Among the first generation of England’s great artist-lithographers the name of James Duffield Harding ranks with the best, and, as an innovator and tireless experimenter in the then infant art of lithography, he is second to none. After receiving a handful of lessons in water-colour from Samuel Prout, Harding first distinguished himself in that field, becoming an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colour in 1820 and a full Academician in the following year. His introduction to lithography began in 1820 when he met the lithographic artist and master printer, Charles Joseph Hullmandel. James Harding first contributed some original lithographs to Britannia Delineata and Voyages Pittoresques before launching out with accomplished sets of topographical views executed entirely by his own hand. These include, Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836), Park and Forest (1844) and Scotland Delineated (1852). This original lithograph entitled, "Tynemouth, Northumberland" hails from Harding's 1936 set, Sketches at Home and Abroad. The scene depicts a view of depicts King Edward's Bay with the old lighthouse, and Tynemouth Castle and the Benedictine Priory in the background. |
Almost all of J. D. Harding’s lithographs were printed by the greatest lithographic technician of the day, Charles Joseph Hullmandel (London, 1789-1850). Hullmandel worked closely with England’s greatest lithographic artists, including Samuel Prout, Thomas Shotter Boys, Richard Lane, William Westall and others. In 1821 he collaborated with the fine French artist, Theodore Gericault (1791-1824), on the set, Various Subjects Drawn from Life and on Stone. Charles Hullmandel was the author of A Manual of Lithography (1820), and The Art of Drawing on Stone (1824). Among his influential innovations in the art of lithography are the ‘brush style’ (approximately 1831), the ‘stump style’ and ‘tinted style’ (approximately 1835) and the lithotint process (1841). The ‘stump’ and ‘tinted’ styles were first employed extensively to the lithographs found within Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836).
James Duffield Harding was a full member of the Old Watercolour Society. He exhibited his art in London, from 1811 to 1864, and was an annual exhibitor at the Royal Academy, from 1811 to 1858. He was a lifetime teacher of both lithographic and watercolour techniques, always with an emphasis upon direct observation of nature. Among his most famous pupils was John Ruskin (1819-1900). Today the art of James Harding is included in such major collections as the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Sketches at Home and Abroad: Sketches at Home and Abroad was published as a set of imperial folio size and contained in total fifty-one original plates of single tint lithographs (including the title page), all drawn on the stone by James Harding, such is the case with this original lithograph entitled, "Tynemouth, Northumberland". The views included scenes of Britain, France, Monaco, Italy and Germany. Michael Twyman writes, "The original drawings were made over a period from September 1824 to October 1835, but many date from 1834 when J. D. Harding made an extensive continental tour. It is not known when the drawings were put on stone, but presumably some time after October, 1835. They were printed by Hullmandel and published by Charles Tilt in an edition of 1,000 copies, after which the drawings were then effaced from the stones." *
Sketches at Home and Abroad marks a milestone in the history of early lithography. Here, for the first time, tint-stones were extensively employed to create further tonal values. Furthermore, an extra stone was often used to provide accents of China white upon the actual images. Joseph Pennell comments, "In Sketches at Home and Abroad are some of Harding’s finest compositions, which helped to develop tint-work. They are admirable renderings on tinted paper, heightened by Chinese white, printed from a second stone or with the lights scraped or etched out in the tint." **
The lithographs from this meticulously made set gained for James Duffield Harding a strong reputation, both in England and on the continent. In fact, for his work dealing with Sketches at Home and Abroad the artist was presented with a diamond ring from King Louis-Phillipe of France.
Tynemouth, Northumberland (King Edward's Bay, Lighthouse, Castle and Priory): An original lithograph by the British artist, James Duffield Harding, "Tynemouth, Northumberland" is printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as printed by Hullmandel and published by Charles Tilt , Sketches at Home and Abroad in London in 1836. In this original James Duffield Harding lithograph, we see the famous ruins of Tynemouth Castle and the Benedictine Priory on the rocky headland known as (Pen Bal Crag), situated along the North Sea and River Tyne in Tynemouth-on-Tyne, Northumberland, North East of England. At one point, this location was one of the largest fortified areas in England, and has been referenced from the time of William the Conqueror to World War II. This medieval castle was built during the 14th century, but the priory was built much earlier, sometime in the early 7th century, possibly by Edwin of Northumbria. The priory also served as the burial ground for such notable kings as, St. Oswine of Deira, Osred II of Northumbria, and Malcolm III of Scotland. Facing the North Sea is the lighthouse, which was built from priory stone in 1665, and remained in operation until 1895, but was demolished in 1898. Today, these historical ruins are situated only half a mile from the center of town.
Francis Grose's folio entitled, The Antiquities of England and Wales published in 1786 contained three original engravings depicting this site; the one by Richard Godfrey (London, born, 1728) entitled, "The Gate of Tynemouth Castle, Northumberland" is dated March 12, 1778, & the other two (plates I and II), were both entitled, Tynemouth Priory, and Castle Northumberland. Plate I’ contains the artist’s monogram, ‘L.L.’ & is dated, March, 1774; it depicts a close-up view of the Priory with its surrounding buildings. Plate II is by Samuel Sparrow, and is dated, March 14, 1774; it depicts a panoramic view of Tynemouth Priory, and Castle in Northumberland from King Edward’s Bay. In Plate I, Francis Grose (1731-1791), writes of this castle and priory; “The time when this Monastery was first founded, as well as the founder, are both uncertain.” Grose then notes a passage from the Collectionea, Vol. III. Page 24 by John Leland or Leyland, antiquary (c. 1503-1552), and writes; “Edwin, King of Deira, or the country between the Rivers Humber and Tees, who reigned about the year 627, built a Chapel of Wood at Tynemouth, wherein his Daughter, Rossetta, took the Veil; and that this Chapel was afterwards rebuilt by St. Oswald, with stone. Tanner, in his account of this House, says, ’Among the Monasteries and Churches founded by St Oswald, the first Christian King of Northumberland, this is reckoned to be one, the others ascribe its foundation to King Ecgfrid’, etc..”. *** Ecgfrid, King of the Northumbrians was killed in the year 685. Grose also writes that there is proof of the great antiquity of this castle, and pointed out that St. Herbald, the companion of St. John of Beverley was a Monk and Abbot at this priory at the beginning of the eighth century. Also mentioned is the plundering of the priory by the Danes, first in the eighth century, a second time in the ninth century, when the Danes, Hunguar and Hubba completely burnt down the priory, and then during the reign (c. 924-927), of King Ethelstan of the Saxons, when the site was occupied by robbers and pirates for a period of time, and after they were expelled, the ruins lay without repair for many years. Then during the Reign (1042-1066), of Edward the Confessor, the Castle was rebuilt by Tostig, the Earl of Northumberland. In 1564, this Castle was the birthplace of the famous, Henry Percy, 9th Earl of Northumberland.
