James Duffield Harding's "Roslin Castle" belongs to the 1852 set, "Scotland Delineated", and contains the many graduations from white to gray to black that James Harding's lithotint process became famous for. This original lithograph is printed upon stiff nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins, titled and signed in the stone "Roslin Castle / J D Harding " as published in London in 1852. The scene depicts a view of the ruins of Roslin Castle with an arched doorway secured by a wooden gate. To the right there is a woman seated on a rock and a man resting on the ground, and further back there is a man standing on a slope near the wall of the Castle. "Roslin Castle" is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by the British artist, James Harding. |

Note: | James Duffield Harding 'James Harding': Among the first generation of England's great artist-lithographers the name of James Duffield Harding ranks with the best. And, as an accomplished innovator and a tireless experimenter in the then recent art of lithography, he is second to none. James Harding studied water colour techniques under Samuel Prout and engraving under J. Pye. He first distinguished himself as a water colour painter, becoming an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colour in 1820 and a full Academician in the following year. But it was to the development of the medium of lithography that James Duffield Harding made his finest contributions. |
James Duffield Harding's introduction to lithography began when he came in contact with the lithographic printer, Charles Hullmandel, in 1820. Hullmandel commissioned Harding to contribute original lithographs to his topographical series, Britannia Delineata and Voyages Pittoresques. James Harding then executed his own lithographic sets, the most famous being, Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836), Park and Forest (1844), and Scotland Delineated (1852).
Apart from Harding's great skill at rendering architectural and topographical views was his creativity within the medium of lithography. As early as 1836, James Harding had invented and employed a technique which he termed,'lithotint'. Briefly this technique required a second, individual stone to render the many complex tonal values of light, shade and tint. Clearly, this was a first important step towards colour lithography and was widely used throughout Europe by 1850. Roslin Castle belongs to the 1852 set, Scotland Delineated, and contains the many graduations from white to gray to black that James Duffield Harding's lithotint process became famous for. This original James Harding lithograph is signed in the stone "Roslin Castle / J D Harding " in the stone. The scene depicts a view of the ruins of Roslin Castle with an arched doorway secured by a wooden gate. To the right there is a woman seated on a rock and a man resting on the ground, and further back there is a man standing on a slope near the wall of the Castle. The British Museum includes an impression of "Roslin Castle" in its permanent collection, Registration number, 1863,0214.1470.
