James Duffield Harding’s original lithograph, The Old Castle and Bridge at Verona was created for the 1836 publication, Sketches at Home and Abroad. The completed portfolio contained fifty-one large views of locations in Britain, France, Germany, Austria, Monaco and Italy. This impression is printed upon thick wove paper and with large, full margins as published in London in 1836. It is titled, dated and initialed in the stone to the lower right, "The Old Castle Bridge at Verona, Oct. 1834, J D H". This Italian landscape depicts a view of the Old Castle (Castel Vecchio) and Scaliger Bridge (Ponte di Castel Vecchio or Ponte Scaligero), as seen from the banks of the Adige River in 1834. The bridge was built in the medieval city of Verona in northern Italy around 1355 for Lord Cangrande II della Scala. A historical fortress, Castelvecchio is today the home of the Castelvecchio museum. J. D. Harding included another view of Verona in the Sketches, entitled, Verona. "The Old Castle and Bridge at Verona" is an important and historical record of this city, and a splendid, original example of the lithographic and Italian landscape art created by the British artists, J. D. Harding. |

Note: | James Duffield Harding 'J. D. Harding': Among the first generation of England’s great artist-lithographers the name of James Duffield Harding ranks with the best, and, as an innovator and tireless experimenter in the then infant art of lithography, he is second to none. After receiving a handful of lessons in water-colour from Samuel Prout, Harding first distinguished himself in that field, becoming an Associate of the Society of Painters in Water-Colour in 1820 and a full Academician in the following year. His introduction to lithography began in 1820 when he met the lithographic artist and master printer, Charles Joseph Hullmandel. James Harding first contributed some original lithographs to Britannia Delineata and Voyages Pittoresques before launching out with accomplished sets of topographical views executed entirely by his own hand. These include, Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836), Park and Forest (1844) and Scotland Delineated (1852). This original lithograph entitled, "The Old Castle and Bridge, Verona" hails from Harding's 1936 set, Sketches at Home and Abroad. The scene depicts a view of the Old Castle (Castel Vecchio) and Scaliger Bridge (Ponte di Castel Vecchio or Ponte Scaligero), as seen from the banks of the Adige River in 1834. |
Almost all of J. D. Harding’s lithographs were printed by the greatest lithographic technician of the day, Charles Joseph Hullmandel (London, 1789-1850). Hullmandel worked closely with England’s greatest lithographic artists, including Samuel Prout, Thomas Shotter Boys, Richard Lane, William Westall and others. In 1821 he collaborated with the fine French artist, Theodore Gericault (1791-1824), on the set, Various Subjects Drawn from Life and on Stone. Charles Hullmandel was the author of A Manual of Lithography (1820), and The Art of Drawing on Stone (1824). Among his influential innovations in the art of lithography are the ‘brush style’ (approximately 1831), the ‘stump style’ and ‘tinted style’ (approximately 1835) and the lithotint process (1841). The ‘stump’ and ‘tinted’ styles were first employed extensively to the lithographs found within Sketches at Home and Abroad (1836).
James Duffield Harding was a full member of the Old Watercolour Society. He exhibited his art in London, from 1811 to 1864, and was an annual exhibitor at the Royal Academy, from 1811 to 1858. He was a lifetime teacher of both lithographic and watercolour techniques, always with an emphasis upon direct observation of nature. Among his most famous pupils was John Ruskin (1819-1900). Today the art of James Harding is included in such major collections as the Ashmolean Museum, Oxford, and the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London.
Sketches at Home and Abroad: Sketches at Home and Abroad was published as a set of imperial folio size and contained in total fifty-one original plates of single tint lithographs (including the title page), all drawn on the stone by James Harding, such is the case with this original lithograph entitled, "The Old Castle and Bridge, Verona". The views included scenes of Britain, France, Monaco, Italy and Germany. Michael Twyman writes, "The original drawings were made over a period from September 1824 to October 1835, but many date from 1834 when J. D. Harding made an extensive continental tour. It is not known when the drawings were put on stone, but presumably some time after October, 1835. They were printed by Hullmandel and published by Charles Tilt in an edition of 1,000 copies, after which the drawings were then effaced from the stones." *
Sketches at Home and Abroad marks a milestone in the history of early lithography. Here, for the first time, tint-stones were extensively employed to create further tonal values. Furthermore, an extra stone was often used to provide accents of China white upon the actual images. Joseph Pennell comments, "In Sketches at Home and Abroad are some of Harding’s finest compositions, which helped to develop tint-work. They are admirable renderings on tinted paper, heightened by Chinese white, printed from a second stone or with the lights scraped or etched out in the tint." **
The lithographs from this meticulously made set gained for James Duffield Harding a strong reputation, both in England and on the continent. In fact, for his work dealing with Sketches at Home and Abroad the artist was presented with a diamond ring from King Louis-Phillipe of France.

This original J. D. Harding lithograph depicts a view of the Old Castle (Castel Vecchio) and Scaliger Bridge (Ponte di Castel Vecchio or Ponte Scaligero), as seen from the banks of the Adige River in 1834. The bridge was built in the medieval city of Verona in northern Italy around 1355 for Lord Cangrande II della Scala. The fortified arched structure is constructed of red brick in the upper part and white marble in the lower. The bridge was completely destroyed by the Germans during the last world war, but was reconstructed (with the exception of the left tower), to its original form between 1949 and 1951. A historical fortress, Castelvecchio is today the home of the Castelvecchio museum. An article in Lippincott’s Magazine of Popular Literature and Science describes the bridge, it reads; “One of its most striking features is the Castel Vecchio (old castle) and adjacent Ponte del Castello (castle bridge). For they seem but parts of one great fortification, turreted and battlemented, built by Can Grande II, in 1355. The bridge is an extraordinary structure, the arches being extremely unequal in size; the span of the largest is about a hundred and sixty feet. The mass, the irregularity, the strength of the piles, the dark river hurrying below, give the spot a grimness not often found on the sunny side of the Alps." ***
