Martin Hardie is an artist of sensitiveness
and distinction, who is also Keeper of the Engraving Department at South
Kensington and Honorary Secretary of the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers
and Engravers. He learned his technique under Sir Frank Short, but the
soundness of his traditions has not spoiled the individuality of his vision.
His is a refined and delicate talent founded upon good draughtsmanship
and an exquisite sense of atmosphere." * ( James Laver, A History
of British and American Etching, Ernest Benn Ltd., London, 1929,
p. 98.) |
|
An important English etcher, watercolourist, author and
scholar, Martin Hardie was educated at Cambridge and studied etching techniques
under Sir Frank Short at the Royal College of Art. A great authority on
the histories of English watercolours and etchings he was the author of
numerous books and articles. Martin Hardie held the influential post of Keeper
of the Department of Prints and Drawings at the Victoria and Albert Museum
from 1921 to 1935. Among other accomplishments from this post, he created
the revival of interest in the watercolours and etchings of Samuel Palmer
and his school. |
|
Martin Hardie was a full member of both the Royal Engravers
and the Royal Water Colour Society. He was also awarded the prestigious
C.B.E. for his contribution to British art. Major collections of Martin Hardie's
etchings and watercolours are located at the British Museum and the Victoria
and Albert Museum, London. |
|
In total Martin Hardie created slightly over one hundred
and ninety original etchings and engravings during his career. A War
Victim, one of Martin Hardie's last great drypoint engravings, was created
from sketches the artist made in the vicinity of Bosham in 1945. It was
printed by David Strang in a sole edition of 20 impressions and five trial
proofs and was first exhibited at the Royal Society of Painter-Etchers
in 1947. |
