Much of Thomas S. Handforth's art depicts the peoples and places of foreign lands. Much traveled, he visited North Africa, Mexico and Canada in the late 1920's. During the 1930's he worked extensively in China and Southeast Asia. With its brilliant use of light and shade and line, Rain (Western Canada) is considered one of his finest works of original art. Rain was awarded the 'Emil Fuchs' Prize for the second best print in the Brooklyn Society of Etchers: 12th Annual Exhibition at the Brooklyn Museum in 1927. Thomas Handforth created at least three Canadian farm scene etchings in 1927, the first is entitled, Clayoquote, printed in an edition of fifty impressions. Clayoquot Sound is located on the west coast of Vancouver Island, British Columbia. Both the Spencer Museum of art ID#1988.0041 and the Minneapolis Institute of Arts, Accession Number: P.87.16.20, include an impression of Clayoquote (1927), in their collection. The second etching is entitled, Opisat, also printed in an edition of fifty impressions. Opisat is a village located near Meares Island and Tofino, also located in the Clayoquote Sound region in British Columbia. Opisat is the main village of the Tia-o-aqui-aht, First Nations. At one time, Opisat was the location of Fort Defiance, an American fur trading post. Rain (Western Canada), hails from a private collection located in British Columbia. It is the third etching depicting the same subject and it was also printed in (1927), with a similar size edition of (fifty impressions). Vancouver Island is on the British Columbia Coast, Canada's western continental coastline on the Pacific Ocean above Tacoma, Washington, Handforth's birth place. Another impression of Rain (1927), is housed in the collection of the Seattle Public Library. ID# SPl_art_H192Ra. It is interesting that little information is available concerning the time Handforth spent in Canada. However, the etchings previously mentioned, and a listing for Thomas Schofield Handforth in Evelyn McMann's art directory validate his work in Canada, Reference: Biographical Index of Artists in Canada, Evelyn De R. McMann, University of Toronto Press Incorporated 2003, Toronto, Buffalo, & London. That book recorded over 8,800 artists that were active in Canada from the 17th century to the year the book was published. Born in Montreal, Evelyn de Rostaing McMann (1913-1998), was a well, respected author of important Canadian art reference books and art catalogues. She worked at the Vancouver, BC Public Library for fourteen years and during that time, she was responsible for indexing Canadian art in the Fine Arts and Music Division of the library. |
