Note:	Philip Gilbert Hamerton is known firstly as an author and arts scholar. In particular his books upon the art of etching stand as a major catalyst in the nineteenth century revival of etching as a primary artistic medium. His first book, "The Painter's Camp", was published in 1862. He also served as both the editor and publisher of "The Portfolio" (1870-1893), an important arts annual dealing extensively with the art of etching. Of his numerous books the most influential was "Etching and Etchers" (1868), which introduced both artists and collectors to the many creative and technical aspects of the medium. In his publications Philip Gilbert Hamerton often commissioned contemporary artists to submit original etchings. These etchers included such masters as Whistler, Haden, Palmer, Jongkind, Appian and Israels.
	P. G. Hamerton came to London at an early age to study art. He was a full member of the Royal Society of Painters and Etchers. Some of his later etchings appeared in "The Portfolio". "At Autun, France" is an early Philip Gilbert Hamerton etching and was published in a very small edition. His art was exhibited at the Royal Academy and elsewhere.

Condition:	Printed upon fine china paper and pressed onto a large sheet of hand made, laid paper with the 'Arches' watermark and with full, deckled margins as printed by Philip Gilbert Hamerton in 1864. Signed and dated in the plate along the lower right margin. A rich, deeply printed impression and in excellent condition throughout. "At Autun, France" represents a charming, original example of the etched art of Philip Gilbert Hamerton.
