Frederick Garrison Hall: During the 1920's Frederick
Garrison Hall was one of America's most sought after etchers. His training
was first in the profession of architect and only in his thirties did
he turn towards the visual arts. Studying first under William Paxton and
then under Henri Royer, Hall created his first original etching in 1918.
By 1920 his distinctive style was in great demand and during the following
ten years he created a number of memorable etchings depicting the cities
and landscapes of America, France and Italy. |
|
Frederick Garrison Hall was a full member of the Chicago
Society of Etchers, the Brooklyn Society of Etchers and the American Federation
of Arts. Today his etchings are included in the following collections;
Library of Congress, Washington, the Art Institute of Chicago, the Boston
Museum of Fine Arts, the Bibliotheque Nationale, Paris, and the Uffizi
Gallery, Florence, Italy. |
|
With its meticulous details and striking compositional elements,
Rouen, Porte de Gui is a fine example of Hall's art. One contemporary
scholar wrote of Hall's etchings, "In his architectural plates, we have
examples of a fine draughtsmanship, a harmony of line, a mastery of detail
and composition." * These words clearly apply to Rouen, Porte de Gui.
( Ameen Rihani, "The Etchings of Frederick Garrison Hall", The Print
