Note:	Gustav Hagemann: An important twentieth century German painter, sculptor and printmaker, Gustav Hagemann first studied art in Kassel. His education was interrupted by service as a soldier in the First World War (1914-1918). Gustav Hagemann completed his studies at the Art Academy of Munich in 1920. Two years later he accepted the post of an arts teacher in the region of Leipzig.
	Gustav Hagemann first exhibited his art in the early 1920's. By 1927 his work was the subject of one man exhibitions in Berlin, Leipzig and elsewhere. From 1926 to 1939 Gustave Hagemann annually visited the northern lands of Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Lapland. Lapland, in particular, provided the inspiration for Hagemann's art and through his paintings, engravings and woodcuts of this land and its people, he provided a most valuable artistic and historical record of the Lapland culture. The Second World War (1939-1945) prevented the artist from traveling to his 'second home', but he resumed his annual visits from 1950 to 1966.
	Most of Gustav Hagemann's early Lapland engravings and etchings were printed by Otto Felsing in Berlin. Felsing was one of Germany's master printers of the era and was also responsible for printing etchings by such major artists as Kollwitz, Nolde, Kubin, Orlik and Vogeler. As well, Hagemann's early prints were not numbered in specific editions but it is known that all were published in very small numbers.
	Gustav Hagermann's fine art is the subject of a 1981 book entitled, Gustav Hagemann, Der Maler des Nordens. His paintings, engravings and sculpture are included in numerous public collections in both Germany and Scandanavia.

Condition:	Printed upon wove paper and with margins extending more than one inch from the plate-mark on all sides. Signed, titled and dated by the artist in pencil in the lower margin. Containing mat burning about 1/4 of an inch from the plate mark on all sides, else a strong impression with full burr and in good condition throughout. Lapplander (Laplander) represents a prime, original example of the famous art of Gustave Hagemann.
