Note:	"I mention Haden's 'Complete Angler' for two reasons. It is an impression in broad line and deep biting, done at a time when Haden (in a letter to Hamerton) complained, in haste, of being "old, blind and unhappy," so that "the faculties no longer obey the will." (Yet 'The Complete Angler') marks the beginning of that deeper and freer manner which Haden began to develop ... arriving at a climax in a big plate called "Greenwich," an ample impression of sunset playing upon architecture. It was condemned at once by every pictorial critic who wanted the etcher's art to be a patient dawdler searching after the full tonal values that belong to painters." *
	Undoubtedly the two most important British etchers of the nineteenth century are James A. McNeil Whistler and his brother-in-law, Sir Francis Seymour Haden. Haden was one of the first etchers of the time to take his plates outdoors and work directly from nature. He encouraged and influenced his brother-in-law to do the same, so much so that Whistler dedicated his first set of etchings, The French Set, to Haden. When Whistler moved to London in 1859 he was a frequent visitor to Haden's household and produced both etchings and paintings of the family members. Several years later, however, serious rifts became apparent between these two great artists. In Paris in 1867 an argument resulted in Whistler pushing Haden through a plate-glass window. Haden and Whistler never spoke to each other again.
	Sir Francis Seymour Haden's artistic career is all the more remarkable in the fact that he was an 'amateur'. A leading surgeon of obstetrics, he was educated at Derby School, Christ's Hospital and University College, London. He then completed his medical education at the Sorbonne, Paris and in Grenoble. Haden was a fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons (1857), a consulting surgeon to the Chapel Royal, vice-president of the Obstetrical Society of London and one of the founders of the Royal Hospital for Incurables (1850).
	Seymour Haden's first etchings date from 1843 when he visited Italy, but most of his work in this medium does not begin until 1858. In total he created slightly over 250 original etchings, the majority being landscapes. He achieved an international fame in this area and his landscape compositions are distinguished by his mastery of foliage, water and atmospheric effects. Seymour Haden served as president of the Society of Painter-Etchers, was elected a member of the Athenaeum (1891) and was knighted in 1894. He also received an honorary membership from the Institut de France (1905) and the Societe des Artistes Francais. Haden was the author of The Etched Work of Rembrandt (1879) and The Art of the Painter-Etchers (1891).
	With its deep lines and brilliant tones The Complete Angler is a superb example of Seymour Haden's late style. It was first published by Hogarth and Sons, London, in 1878. Two years later P. G. Hamerton requested the plate for publication in Etching and Etchers.
	Hamerton's, Etching and Etchers: The writings of Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894) did more to restore the art of etching as an original and major art medium than any other nineteenth century author. His first book, The Painter's Camp, was published in 1862. He also served as the editor of The Portfolio (1870-1893), a major arts publication dealing extensively with the art of etching. Of his many books the most influential was Etching and Etchers which introduced both artists and collectors to the many creative and technical aspects of the medium. The first edition was published in 1868 and included original etchings by Jongkind, Haden and Palmer as well as late printings of seventeenth century Dutch masters. A second edition followed in 1876, but without any original etchings. The third edition (from which this original etching hails) was published in a large paper edition limited to one thousand copies. For this most valuable publication Hamerton secured etchings from such contemporary artists as Whistler, Haden, Palmer, Israels, Jacque, Jacquemart, Billet, Soumy, Appian, Legros, Unger, Herkomer and others. In total over twenty original etchings were printed for this important 1880 portfolio. It should finally be noted that Hamerton was meticulous in his inclusion of plates for this edition. Each of the etchings selected were in pristine condition, showing no sign of wear or deterioration of any kind.
