Albrecht Gutjahr

Albrecht Gutjahr - Tavern Scene

Tavern Scene

Albrecht Gutjahr's original etching and drypoint engraving, "Tavern Scene" is printed upon laid paper. It is signed in pencil by the artist and signed in the plate in the lower left corner with his 'AG' monogramme. "Tavern Scene" is fine, original example of the art of Albrecht Gutjahr and of the early twentieth century movement of German Expressionism.

Title: Tavern Scene
Artist: Gutjahr, Albrecht (Germany, 1880 - ?)
Date: c. 1920
Medium: Original Etching & Drypoint Engraving
Note: With its charged emotional content, German Expressionism was a major factor of early twentieth century art. Such great printmakers and painters as Max Beckmann, Otto Dix, Ernst Ludwig Kirchner, Emile Nolde and Max Pechstein led the way. There were, however, many more great German artists who embraced Expressionist techniques to delineate their lives and culture.
Little is known of the life of Albrecht Gutjahr. Born in 1880, he is known mainly through his fine etchings and drypoints which were printed and published from the end of the First World War (1918) to about 1930. Stylistically, his art bears similarities to that of Max Beckmann and it is possible that he studied under Beckmann when he was a professor of the arts school at Frankfurt-am-Main.
Most of Gutjahr's etchings were published in small editions and many deal with interior scenes. At auction his art is now eagerly collected as fine examples of German Expressionism from the important Weimar era.
