Pierre Gusman: A French wood engraver,
painter, illustrator, author and art scholar, Pierre Gusman was the son
of Adolphe Gusman (1821-1905), who was a primary engraver for the many
illustrated books of Gustave Dore. Pierre Gusman studied art techniques
both under his father and with Corman. His first series of engravings
were reproductive images after the work of such old masters as Rembrandt
and Hals. In the early twentieth century, however, Pierre Gusman was a leader in
France of the creative wood engraving where the work of art is entirely
designed and engraved by the artist himself. Such is the case with
"Entree du Jardin de Pomone" (Entrance to the Garden of Pomone), which
was created by Gusman in 1925. Pierre Gusman was a collaborative editor
and artist for such publications as the "Gazette des Beaux-Arts", "la Revue
de l'Art ancienne et moderne" and "l'Estampe et l'Affiche". |
|
Pierre Gusman was a well respected scholar upon the arts,
particularly in the field of the woodcut and wood engraving. He was the
author of such works as "La Gravure sur Bois en France au XIXe Siecle"
(1929) and "La Gravure sur Bois, Ancienne et Moderne" (1933). Gusman also
both illustrated and wrote a number of books, such as, "Pompei, The City,
Its Life and Art" (1900), "Decoration Murale a Pompei" (1924) and "La Cite
du Vatican: Rome Italienne et Contemporaine" (1935). |
|
"The Print Connoisseur" published illustrated articles on
contemporary etchers and engravers on a quarterly basis from January,
1920 to December, 1931. A minimum of one original print was commissioned
for each issue. During its decade of publishing such major artists as
George Elbert Burr, John Taylor Arms, Frank Benson, George Wales, Paul
Honore, Samuel Chamberlain, Birger Sandzen, Lynd Ward, J. W. Winkler,
Preissig, Alan Lewis and J. J. Lankes contributed original etchings,
linocuts and woodcuts. This New York based publication was thus responsible
for commissioning some of the finest original art of early twentieth
century America. |
|
The work of contemporary French artists also played a large
role in the publication. Articles on and original etchings and wood engravings
by such French artists as Paul Mathey, Georges Gobo, Pierre Gusman, Gaston
de Latenay, Louis Godefroy and Jacques Beltrand were commissioned during
this decade. |
|
In the January, 1925 number of "The Print Connoisseur", Pierre Gusman's
graphic art was the subject of an illustrated article entitled, "Pierre
Gusman, Engraver", by P. J. Amgoulvent. This original wood engraving,
"Entree du Jardin de Pomone" (Entrance to the Garden of Pomone), was commissioned
as the frontispiece to this number. |
