Note: | Rudolf Grossmann: An early twentieth century German painter, etcher and lithographer, Rudolf Grossmann studied art at the Dusseldorf Academy and in Paris under Lucian Simon and Poulerauce. He then returned to Germany and lived in or near Berlin for the remainder of his life. Paris, however, was a second home to Rudolf Grossmann and he frequently visited the city to work and exhibit his art. There, his fellow artists and companions included Georg Grosz and Jules Pascin. He was also employed as a teacher in the French capital and taught printmaking techniques to Sonia Delaunay. |
A master of portraits, figure scenes landscapes and cityscapes, Rudolf Grossmann published his first etchings and lithographs around 1905. His art was commissioned by many major publishers in both Germany and France. Landstrasse bei Zehlendorf (Rural Road near Zehlendorf) was published by Bruno Cassier and formed one of a series of lithographs created by Rudolf Grossmann from 1911 to 1914, entitled, Berliner Bilder ('Berlin Scenes'). These fine, original lithographs provide valuable artistic examples of pre-World War One Berlin and its environs. Today the art of Rudolf Grossmann is included in public museums in Berlin, Manheim and Paris. | |
