Mandel Grossman immigrated to the United States at an early age. Settling
in Brooklyn (Columbia Heights), he studied art at the Educational Alliance
Art School, the Cooper Union and the Art Students' League of New York. By
the mid 1920's Grossman was establishing a solid reputation for his etched
and engraved views of New York City and other major American centers. During
the following twenty years he became best known for his urban views, landscapes
and figure studies in the media of etchings and drawings. Elias Grossman
traveled extensively during the 1930's and 1940's and etched many scenes
of Italy, Spain and the Holy Land. |
|
Today examples of his etchings and engravings are found in
major public collections, such as The Georgetown University, Lauinger Library,
The National Gallery of Art and the University of Michigan Museum of Art. |
|
Wailing Wall is one of Grossman's largest and most
impressive etchings. It was completed by the artist in 1943. Along the top
margin of the plate mark, however, he has written in small letters, "started
in December in 1933 - finished in my studio in 1943". Extensive drypointing
and plate tone are used throughout the image. As is usual with Grossman's
fine art the figures are delineated with mastery. |
