Note: |
Reginald Leslie Grooms 'Reginald Grooms': One of Cincinnati's most
distinguished artists and art educators, Reginald Leslie Grooms began his education
at the age of seventeen at the Cincinnati Art Academy. He remained there
five years studying under such instructors as John Weis, James Hopkins and
William Hentschell. In 1923, Reginald Grooms left for Paris to study at the Academie
Julian, under Jules Pages and Paul Albert Laurens. One of his fellow American
classmates was Grant Wood. While in Paris, Grooms was invited to exhibit
his paintings at the Spring Salons held at the Grande Palais in both 1924
and 1925. He was the youngest American artist to receive this distinction. |
|
Reginald Grooms returned to Cincinnati late in 1925 to assume
teaching positions at both the Cincinnati Art Academy and the University
of Cincinnati School of Applied Arts. He eventually became the Chairman
of the Fine Arts Department at the University and held that post until 1965.
He thus provided a major influence upon Cincinnati artists for over forty
years. |
|
During his career, Reginald Leslie Grooms exhibited his paintings and original
prints at such major venues as the Cincinnati Art Museum, the Butler Art
Institute, the Pan American fine Arts Exhibit (1935), the New York World's
Fair, the San Francisco World's Fair (1939) and the Pennsylvania Academy
of Fine Arts. He was a full member of the Scarab Club, the American Society
for Aesthetics, the Ohio Watercolor Society and the Cincinnati Art Club. |

Created in 1932, The Scissors #11 is a delightful
example of Reginald Leslie Grooms's art. The subject is of course the sport of wrestling
and the finely delineated joys and pains one receives from it. |
Edition: |
Reginald Grooms did not note the edition size for Scissors #11. As
with many of the prints created during the years of the Great Depression,
however, it is safe to assume that only a handful of impressions were printed. |
