John Grillo: A widely known contemporary American printmaker, John Grillo
studied art at the Hartford Art School (1935-38), the California School
of Fine Arts (1946) and the Hofmann School in New York City (1949-50).
He began to exhibit his art in New York in 1950, and during the following
decades he established himself as a leading imagist and minimalist painter
and printmaker. He has also taught art at such influential institutions
as the School of Visual Arts, New York, the University of California
in Berkeley and at the Tamarind Lithography Workshop. John Grillo's
original lithographs are included in many major public collections. For
example, the prestigious Museum of Modern Art in New York lists sixteen
of his prints in its permanent collections. |
|
Most of John Grillo's art is left intentionally untitled
as he believes such labels only detract from the actual image. And many
of his lithographs, and silk screens, such as this original example, "Untitled #18" are
printed in very small editions. The complex printings of absolute colours
and shapes prohibits large editions. John Grillo has long been known
as a perfectionist: Colour and form are everything. |
Size: |
20 X 26 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate,
height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |
|
UnMatted |
Condition: |
Printed on wove 'Arches' paper and with full
margins as published in 1969, numbered, dated and signed by the artist
along the lower margin. "Untitled #18" contains slight matte
burning along the outer margins, else a superbly printed impression and
in excellent condition
throughout. This scarce, original lithograph represents a prime example
of the influential art of John Grillo. |
