Thomas Garland Greene

Working Horses

Thomas Garland Greene's original watercolour, Working Horses was created by the Canadian artist in 1901. It is painted on fine, hand made paper and is signed by T. G. Greene in the lower right corner of the image. This watercolour depicts a farm scene with two large horses helping to plow the field. In Working Horses, we see the masterful way in which the artist contrasts the rhythms of the ploughed field with the movement of the clouds and trees in the background. It is a fine, original example of the landscape art created by Thomas Garland Green.

Artist: Greene, Thomas Garland (Toronto, 1875 - Orillia, 1955)
Date: 1901
Medium: Original Watercolour
Note: Thomas Garland Greene: An important, early twentieth century Canadian artist, Thomas Garland Greene first studied under William Cruikshank at the Central Ontario School of Art, in Toronto. From 1902 to 1904, Greene lived and worked in London, England, while concluding his studies there at the Finsbury Art School. Returning permanently to Ontario, T. G. Greene taught art techniques for ten years at the Ontario Ladies College, Whitby, before accepting posts at St. Andrew's College and the Northern Vocational School in Toronto.
Thomas Garland Greene was a founding member of the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour, becoming its President in 1929. As well, he was a founding member of the Canadian Society of Graphic Art and assumed the position of President from 1931 to 1933.
Throughout his career, Thomas Garland Greene was primarily drawn to the patterns of nature. In Working Horses, for example, we see the masterful way in which he contrasts the rhythms of the ploughed field with the movement of the clouds and trees in the background. Such stylistic explorations as this, have made a number of critics view Greene's art as the precursor to the Group of Seven.
