Note: | Eliza Pratt Greatorex 'Eliza Greatorex': Although she was born in Ireland and died in France, the greatest part of Eliza Greatorex’s life was spent in America. She came to New York City in 1840 and married a prominent organist. At the age of thirty-eight, however, Eliza Pratt Greatorex was left a widow and began to support herself and her family as a painter, etcher, illustrator and teacher. To this end she studied painting under William Hart, in New York, and under Emile Lambinet, in Paris (1861-1862). |
Eliza Greatorex's first accomplishments were as a pen and ink illustrator and as a painter. Eliza Pratt Greatorex initial instructions in etching were under Charles Henri Toussaint (Paris, 1878-1879). From that point on she created a number of fine landscape and city views, both in France and in America. These were exhibited at the prestigious Paris Salon from 1881 to 1894, as well as in Berlin and London.

The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879 to 1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas Moran, Otto Bacher, Stephen Parrish, Henry Farrer, Eliza Pratt Greatorex, Charles Adams Platt and William Merritt Chase.
Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century.
