Eugene Grasset's original lithigraph, Napoleon in Egypt is printed upon nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published in New York by 'The Century' June 1895 and is signed by Grasset with his monogramme in the lower left corner. It was formerly in the collection of Ned A. Flood and bears his catalogue number. Napoleon in Egypt is a fine original example of the art created by the French artist, Eugene-Samuel Grasset.

Note: Eugene-Samuel Grasset 'Eugene Grasset': There is absolutely no doubt that the name of Eugene Samuel Grasset is forever linked with the centre of the Art Nouveau movement in France. Inspired by both the ideal woman, with her long, flowing hair, and the decorative florral designs which today we immediately associate with Art Nouveau. Eugene Grasset designed jewelry and illustrated books, but it was his work in the poster field that had an immediate and lasting impact upon art. None other than Alphonse Mucha was influenced by Grasset's style, and his French pupils, Paul Berthon and Verneuil, carried his work into the twentieth century.
  In America, the Art Nouveau phenomenon swept across the country by storm. The catalyst was provided by Eugene Grasset. At the invitation of the Century Magazine, Grasset created two posters during 1895 containing Napoleonic subject matter. 'The Sun of Austerlitz' and 'Napoleon' in Egypt' were meant to promote Professor Sloane's biographical, 'Life of Napoleon'. The biography was almost instantly forgotten but the two Eugene Grasset posters caused profound effects. All of a sudden, Art Nouveau began to dominate American art, and the famous careers of William Bradley, Penfield, Maxfield Parrish and Louis Rhead were under way. Rhead, in fact, was so inspired by Grasset's two posters of Napoleon that he went to Paris to study under the great master. The Century Magazine produced some of the greatest Art Nouveau posters during this period.
Provenance: This original lithographic poster entitled, Napoleon in Egypt was formerly in the collection of Ned A. Flood and bearing his Catalogue # 186. Ned Arden Flood is listed as one of the three greatest early Art Nouveau Americana collectors. At one point, his famous collection housed over 1,000 American posters from the 1890's. This is one of the fine posters from that collection

Size: 19 X 13 1/4 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.)
  Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials
Condition: Printed on nineteenth century wove paper and with full margins as published by 'The Century' in June 1895. One small scraping mark exists across the 'R' in "Century", and several pinholes are apparent. Else in fine condition throughout with strong, bright colouring and registration. Signed by Eugene Grasset with his monogramme in the lower left corner. It is unusual to find a large, Art Nouveau poster, particularly such a famous example, in such fine condition. Most have been torn, stained or completely destroyed. Altogether, this is a spectacular example from one of the greatest artists from this important era.
