Grant Gregory's original pen and ink drawing, "Excuse Me! Did You Know That Those Foul Cigars Are Detrimental To Your Health?" was created by the artist around 1890. It was commissioned by the "New York Fun Magazine" around 1890. Grant Gregory's original drawing depicts two finely dressed New York gentlemen standing in front of a cigar shop. The older fellow is warning the other about the hazards of smoking cigars. Fortunately, the humour in this original work of art is as topical today as it was when it was created over a century ago. |

Note: | The art of pen and ink drawing reached its finest era in the 1880's and 1890's decades when this form of original art was closely allied with the rise of illustrated journals, periodicals and newspapers throughout Europe, America and Canada. Competition amongst the publishers was very keen and the difference between success or failure often depended upon the popularity of the art and illustrations. Thus the best artists of the day were regularly commissioned by these publishers to submit drawings of topical interest, satire or humor which would then be reproduced in their journals. Regrettably, much of the original art has long been lost to us. |
In America such famous artists as James Montgomery Flagg, William Dana Gibson and A. B. Frost were all working for the daily presses at the conclusion of the nineteenth century. Humor was in huge demand and this eventually give birth to the art of the cartoonist. In the United States, most particularly, humor of a more gentler vein became increasingly popular. One scholar writes of the artists of this genre that, "he feels his mission has been fulfilled if he succeeds in bringing a bit of cheerfulness to some one's heart and thereby makes the beginning of the day sunnier. The cartoons of this class never rock the foundations of nations, but they probably make the world a little more cheery as it rolls along." * Such is clearly the case with this original drawing by Grant Gregory.
This original pen and ink drawing, entitled "Excuse Me! Did You Know That Those Foul Cigars Are Detrimental To Your Health?" was commissioned by the short lived "New York Fun Magazine", which existed from 1887 to 1894. Artists who regularly worked for this publication included Grant Gregory, H. W. Rogers, Fred Wakefield and Peter Borckmann. Like all professional artists from this period they were both skilled and accomplished. As well, pen and ink drawings from this period are today collected not only for their artistry but as valuable historical records of the customs, manners, opinions and dress of the day.
