Lorrie Goulet: One of America's foremost twentieth
century sculptors, Lorrie Goulet first studied art techniques as a child
under Amiee Voorhees at the Inwood Pottery Studios (1932-36). Before turning
twenty she also studied at Black Mountain College, North Carolina, under
Josef Albers (1943-45). At the same time she was apprenticed to the sculptor,
Jose de Creeft, whom she would later marry. |
|
Lorrie Goulet's first major solo exhibition took place in
1948 at the Clay Club Sculpture Center, New York City. During the following
years exhibitions of her sculpture, drawings and lithographs took place
at the Museum of Modern Art, New York, the American Federation of Art
as well as in international exhibitions in Algiers, Barcelona and Zagreb.
Lorrie Goulet's art is today included in collections such as the New Jersey State
Museum, the New York Public Library and the Hirshorn Sculpture Garden,
Washington, DC. Lorrie Goulet is a member of the American Sculptors Guild
and a founding member of the Audubon Artists. |
|
During her career, Lorrie Goulet has also been a prominent teacher
and instructor. From 1957 to 1964 she taught at the Museum of Modern Art,
New York. She was also an instructor at the New School for Social Research
(1961-75) and at the Art Students League of New York (1981). |
|
Lorrie Goulet is equally famous for her work in stone, wood
and ceramics. During the 1970's her art was annually exhibited at the
Kennedy Galleries, New York. At this time the Kennedy Galleries was also
a major publisher of contemporary American prints and Dance of Spring
was undoubtedly commissioned by them. Brilliantly delineating both form
and movement, Lorrie Goulet's Dance of Spring emphasizes her famous sculptural
elements within the lithographic medium by employing thick, curved lines
and solid masses of colours. |
