Note: |
Edward Goodall is considered to be one of England's
greatest early and mid-nineteenth century engravers. Almost entirely self-taught,
he practised painting as well as engraving early in his career. None other
than J. M. W. Turner noticed his talents at an 1822 Royal Academy Exhibition
and offered him as many engravings after his own landscape designs as
he could undertake. Goodall thus worked closely with Turner during the
following two decades. |
|
In the 1840's, the large Victorian engraving first emerged
as a distinct form of art. Edward Goodall was at the vanguard of this
demanding medium and created many of the finest early works. Some, such
as this original example, were the result of a collaboration with his
eldest son, Frederick Goodall (1822-1904). At the early age of fourteen,
Frederick Goodall had established a strong reputation for his paintings
and was later elected a full member of the prestigious Royal Academy. |
|
The Angel's Whisper is both a scarce and famous early
Victorian era engraving. Published in London in 1849 it remains one of
the greatest works of art created in this genre. It is a masterwork of
Edward Goodall's engraving techniques, particularly in the mezzotinted
tonal values of light and shade. It is no wonder that The Angel's Whisper
has for a century and a half been hailed as one of the prime engravings
of its era. |
|
Victorian engraving Perhaps the most technically
demanding form of original printmaking of any era, the Victorian engraving
reached its summit during the last half of the nineteenth century. Highly
skilled engravers would often devote more than a full year's labour to
one large engraving, combining such complex methods as mezzotinting, aquatinting,
stippling, etching and engraving to produce remarkable effects in black
and white. When combined these methods would produce the most delicate
tones and hues. During the mid and late nineteenth century these large
engravings became the driving force of the Victorian art world. |
|
Unfortunately, surviving impressions of this unique art
form are now very scarce, particularly early examples such as, The
Angel's Whisper. Because of their large size most of these engravings
were framed. Nineteenth century framers knew next to nothing about conservation
methods and thus the majority of these important works have been unalterably
ruined. Thankfully this beautiful impression reveals damage only in the
outer margins and not within the image itself. |

George C. Williamson, Bryan's Dictionary of Painters and
Engravers, This original mezzotint engraving is listed as one of his best,
Vol. II, p. 261. |
Size: |
26 3/4 X 30 1/2 (Sizes in inches are approximate,
height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |
|
Matted with 100% Archival Materials |
Condition: |
Printed upon mid nineteenth century wove paper and containing
full margins as published in London by Henry Graves in 1849. Containing
the full poem along the lower margin, which was often cut out by the framers.
Evidence of slight foxing exists. As well, a water stain is apparent in
the upper right margin and a restored tear can be seen along the left
margin. The actual engraved image, however, is in excellent condition
throughout and reveals all the subtle tones of an early printing. This
original impression of The Angel's Whisper represents a most famous
example of early nineteenth century Victorian art. |
