Note: | Jacobus Gole: A notable Dutch engraver of the late seventeenth century, Jacobus Gole was equally talented in both the mediums of line and mezzotint engraving. During his career, Gole engraved landscapes and genre scenes after such eminent Dutch painters as van Ostade, Brouwer, Heemskerk and Cornelis Dusart. His greatest legacy, however, is found in his impressive and large portraits of the most famous European statesmen of the day. Gole engraved (and often designed) portraits of such famous individuals as Charles III, King of Spain, Charles XI, King of Sweden, Frederick I, King of Poland, George Augustus, Elector of Brunswick-Luneburg, Cornelis Trump, Admiral of Holland, the Duchess de La Valliere, Mahomet IV, Sultan of Turkey and the Grand Vizier, Kara Mustapha. |
