Note: | Robert Charles Goff actually lived through two distinct careers. A professional soldier, he joined the army when he was eighteen and retired from the Coldstream Guards in 1878. After that time, Goff both etched and painted many views in both England and Continental Europe. His distinctive art quickly gained for him an international reputation and he was elected to the Royal Engravers as well as becoming an honourary member of the academies of Milan and Florence. Goff's art was regularly exhibited at major institutions, such as the Royal Academy, London. Today the etchings of Robert Goff are included in many British and American collections, such as the Victoria and Albert Museum and the British Museum, London. |
Colonel Goff was one of the first British etchers to explore the revolutionary aspects of Whistler's etched art. During the late nineteenth century Whistler's etchings explored modern concerns by hinting and persuading, rather than describing. His almost calligraphic economy of statement caused etchers to explore different avenues of expression. This is clearly seen in The Tower Bridge, where Goff delineates the manner in which the eye focuses on either the foreground or the background. Hence the strong contrasts between these two areas and the almost sketchy nature of the foreground boats and vessels in the Thames. The Tower Bridge is thus an early and important exploration of these elements. | |

Condition: | Printed hand-made Japon paper and with large margins as published in London in 1905. Signed in pencil along the lower plate-mark and numbered '157'. Goff numbered his etchings chronologically. The Tower Bridge, therefore, was his 157th etching. Also signed, dated and annotated, "From London Bridge", in the plate. Apart from slight smudging in the outer margins this is a finely printed impression with full plate tone and in excellent condition throughout. The Tower Bridge is an important, original example of the art of Robert Charles Goff. |
