Note: |
William Frederick George Godfrey 'William Godfrey': The
name of William Frederick George Godfrey has long been associated with
the finest Canadian graphic artists of the early twentieth century. Born
in Britain, William Godfrey studied architecture before immigrating to
Canada in 1910. In Toronto he studied art techniques with Carl Ahrens
and Frederick Challener. William Godfrey became a member of the Canadian
Society of Graphic Arts in 1924 and initially exhibited his drawings
and drypoint engravings with that association. By 1930, however, the
medium of the woodcut had emerged as his primary form of artistic expression.
Within a decade his superb work in this medium was regularly exhibited
both in Canada and in international expositions. W. F. G. Godfrey became
a full member of the Canadian Painter-Etchers in 1931 and assumed its
presidency in 1943 and 1944. |
|
As an artist, William Godfrey displayed a powerful sense
of design and texture. Scholars have compared his woodcut art to both
Leonard Hutchinson, in Canada, and Rockwell Kent, in the United States.
Regardless, Godfrey's very personal, rhythmic lines and forms created
a great impact upon the art of the woodcut in Canada, and The Deserted
Limekiln is clearly one of his finest works. The large majority of William
Godfrey's woodcuts date from the Depression era of the 1930's. |
