Note: |
Georges Gobo: Born to French parents living
in San Francisco, Georges Gobo moved to Paris at a young age and studied
art at both the Paris Salon and at the Societe Nationale des Beaux-Arts.
By 1910 he had established himself as both a painter and illustrator
of note. In this latter category he illustrated such books as Mont
sur la Vile, by Focillon, and L'Etang de Berre, by Maurras.
Georges Gobo's most famous works, however, were his original etchings and drypoint
engravings. Excelling in the genres of portraits, figure studies, landscapes
and architectural views, his etchings were frequently exhibited throughout
both Europe and the United States. |
|
Regardless of the subject matter, Gobo's etched art was
always both brilliant and individualistic. He often combined striking
architectural views with the activities of its residents, often finding
a perfect balance within the comings and goings of street life. Few artists
could capture the fleeting relationships of a bustling crowd as well
as Georges Gobo. |
|
Georges Gobo was a frequent exhibitor with the Societe
Nationale des Beaux-Arts and was awarded the 'prix Cottet' in 1945. Examples
of his original paintings and etchings are housed in the permanent collections
of most major French galleries. |
|
Entrevaux is one of Georges Gobo's largest and
most distinguished original etchings. Combining both etching and extensive
drypointing it portrays the buildings and its inhabitants with striking
tonal values. Entrevaux was published in a limited edition of
fifty, signed impressions. Georges Gobo printed a small handful of artist proof
impressions before publishing the edition. On this particular impression
he has written, "epreuve d'artiste B", which indicates that
it was the second impression pulled from the plate. |
|
Entrevaux is a medieval village located about
60 kilometers from Nice. Georges Gobo's etching and engraving depicts its famous
draw-bridge gate in the foreground and the fortified citadel on the mountain
in the background. |
