Title: | The Fowre Complexions "Sanguine" |
Artist: | Glover, George (London, active, 1632 - 1650) |
Date: | c. 1640 |
Medium: | Original Line Engraving |
Source: | The Four Tempraments |
Note: | This engraving is signed in the lower left corner of the plate with Glover's characteristic 'G. GIo.' mark. Beside his signature and under the verso the publisher has advertised where to buy this print: "Are to be soulde at the three black birds in Canon Street by Matt Cottings". The directions to the print publisher are in darker ink than the rest of the script. I would suspect that he probably changed his address, or corrected a mistake in the address, shortly after the plate was printed. |
Size: | 7 1/2 X 5 (Sizes in inches are approximate, height preceding width of plate-mark or image.) |
Framed and Matted with 100% Archival Materials | |
Condition: | Printed on mid seventeenth century hand-made paper and cropped to the plate-mark, as usual with engravings of this antiquity. One very slight rust mark exists on the left sleeve of the woman; else this engraving is in fine condition throughout. The tonal qualities of the printing and the strength of the lines indicate that this is a very early printing. Altogether this is a superb example of both the art of George Glover and of the first true century of British engraving. |
