Edward Glen: One of London's most talented turn-of-the-century painters,
Edward Glen received his primary instructions in art from his father, who
was an early member of the western Art League. Later, Edward Glen studied
under John Raphael Peel before resuming his apprenticeship at the Pennsylvania
Academy of Fine Art in Philadelphia under William Merrit Chase. Edward
Glen 's instructors recognized his early talents and thus, he was awarded
a scholarship to study in Paris, France, under J. P. Laurens at the Academy
Julian in 1910 and 1911. For several years after, Edward Glen travelled
and painted throughout France. "On the Quai - Normandy Coast" dates
from this period. |
|
By 1916, Edward Glen had returned to London, Ontario, establishing
himself there as a landscape and marine painter. Another scholarship was
then awarded to him -- this time by the Royal Canadian Academy -- but the
European conflict of the First World War made it impossible for him to
study abroad again before the mid 1920's. Edward Glen 's most creative
period is said to date from about 1910 to 1920. "On the Quai - Normandy
Coast" clearly shows Glen's great artistic skill and is superb example
of the art created by him during this inspired phase. |

Edward Glen's art is included in the permanent collection
of the Art Gallery of Ontario, Toronto, the London art Gallery and the
National Gallery of Canada, Ottawa. |
