Note: |
Raimund Girke 'Raimund Gierke': The influential art
of Raimund Girke requires both concentration and meditation from the viewer.
During the early 1970's the artist examined the effects of parallel
layers of color upon the eye and mind. Such is clearly the case with "Untitled Abstract Composition",
an original silkscreen printed in a limited, signed edition of 165 impressions.
After this period Raimund Girke (sometimes spelt 'Gierke')
explored elements of line and tone with white and grey colors playing dominant
roles. |
|
One of Germany's leading painters and printmakers of
the late twentieth century, Raimund Girke studied art techniques at the
Werkkunstschule in Hanover (1951-1952) and then completed his education
at the Staatliche Kunstakademie in Dusseldorf. Shortly thereafter he began
developing a very individual, formally reduced style of composition which
quickly came to the attention of the art world. Girke was thus awarded
prizes from the cities of Wolfsburg (1959) and Stuttgart (1962). |
|
From 1966 to 1971 Raimund Girke taught at the Werkunstschule,
Hanover, and then accepted a teaching position at the Hochscule der Kunste,
Berlin. For the remainder of his influential career he lived and worked
mainly in Berlin and Cologne. In 1995 Raimund Girke was awarded the prestigious
Lovis Corinth Prize. Today the art of Raimund Girke is included in many
public collections, both in Germany and elsewhere. |
