Hans Gerstmayr - To the Memory of a Beautiful Day at our Home

"To the Memory of a Beautiful Day at our Home"

Hans Gerstmayr's Home; "To the Memory of a Beautiful Day at our Home" This original watercolor was created by the twentieth century Austrian artist and Professor Hans Gerstmayr, who became most famous for his fine work in metal, steel engraving and carving. For this watercolor, Hans Gerstmayr cut a paper mat and wrote the following words on it; “Zur erinnerung an gemeinsam verbrachte / Schone tage in unsern heim. / Mauthausen 21. Februar 1955.” A very rough translation is, “To the memory at (of) our mutual time spent / A beautiful day at our home./ Mauthausen, February 21, 1955.” The mat has been fully preserved and these words are pictured in the bottom window of the frame.

Hans Gerstmayr also wrote a dedicatory passage to the recipient of this watercolor on the original backing board. This too has been preserved and is illustrated below.

Title: "To the Memory of a Beautiful Day at our Home"
Artist: Gerstmayr, Hans (St. Valentin, 1882 - Mathausen, Upper Austria, 1987)
Date: 1955
Medium: Original Watercolor
Note: Hans Gerstmayr: A leading twentieth century artist in such media as steel, copper and wrought iron, Hans Gerstmayr studied art techniques in Vienna under such medal artists as Marshall, Cizek and Prof. Schwarz. In the years of 1899 and 1900 his work was awarded three first prizes at major competitions in Vienna. Hans Gerstmayr remained in Vienna until 1914 and worked as an engraver and cutter of steel, jewelry and art pieces which were frequently shown in both national and international exhibitions.
In 1914, Hans Gerstmayr moved to Steyr and joined forces with Michael Blumelhuber (1865-1936) at his master studio for steelcarving. For the following six years, Michael Blumelhuber and Hans Gerstmayr collaborated on a number of commissioned works of art. From 1920 to 1949, Gerstmayr headed the Graveurabteilung der Fachschule (College) fur Eisen und Stahlbearbeitung, in Steyr. During these years he crafted many works in steel, either as pictures, medals or as plaques for memorials.
Hans Gerstmayr moved permanently to the city of Mathausen around 1950. In 1972 the city honored him with the Award of Honor ring and appointed him an honorary citizen. He died at Mathausen in 1987, at the age of 105 years.
Today a large part of the Mauthausen Heimatmuseum is dedicated to the art of Professor Hans Gerstmayr. Their collection includes examples of his hand crafted knives, bracelets, ornaments, medallions and seals.
Hans Gerstmayr authored the book, "Die Technik der Walzenpragung" (1929). In 1982, Carl Hans Watzinger wrote a book on Gerstmayr’s art entitled, "Ein Leben Lang Geliebte Kunst: Hans Gerstmayr und die Stahlschnittkunst".
In many aspects "To the Memory of a Beautiful Day at our Home" is reminiscent of what the influential Viennese architect, Josef Hoffmann, termed 'Gesamtkunstwork' - the total work of art. In the first decade of the twentieth century -- when Hans Gerstmayr lived and worked in Vienna -- Josef Hoffmann's work at the Vienna (Wiener) Werkstatte attempted the complete integration of architecture, art and design. All utensils, furnishings and decorations were fashioned to be in total harmony with the house. This, of course extended to the exterior, where terraces and gardens were designed to the finest detail in concord with the central structure. Surely, this beautiful watercolor of the artist’s home and its surrounding grounds falls within this sphere.
For the watercolor, Hans Gerstmayr cut a paper mat and wrote along with a floral cartouche, the following words on it; "Zur erinnerung an gemeinsam verbrachte / Schone tage in unsern heim. / Mauthausen 21. Februar 1955." A very rough translation is, "To the memory at (of) our mutual time spent / A beautiful day at our home./ Mauthausen, February 21, 1955."
