Note:	Sir Ernest George: An eminent nineteenth century architect, Sir Ernest George was also highly respected for his original etchings and watercolours. He studied art and architecture at the Royal Academy Schools, London, and created his first set of etchings in 1873 ('Etchings on the Moselle'). During the following years Ernest George etched and painted many fine architectural views in France, Holland, Belgium, Germany and Italy.
	Ernest George was a full member of the Royal Society of Etchers and Engravers (1881), the Royal British Artists (1889) and the prestigious Royal Academy (1917). He was also knighted for his contributions to art and architecture in 1912. Both the British Museum and the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, own collections of Sir Ernest George's etchings.
	This original etching of Dordrecht is typical of Ernest George's talent as an architectural etcher. In particular, his subtle rendering of details and use of light and shade made him a most sought after artist. Ernest George contributed a number of original etchings to The Portfolio from 1874 to 1887. Dordrecht is one of them. 	The Portfolio was England's leading art journal of the latter nineteenth century. Founded and edited by Philip Gilbert Hamerton (1834-1894), it was published in annual issues from 1870 to 1892. Hamerton was the influential author of such classic books as Etching and Etchers and for The Portfolio he regularly commissioned such great British etchers as Seymour Haden, D. Y. Cameron, Ernest George and Robert Walker MacBeth to contribute original art. Today these etchings are collected as valuable examples of fine nineteenth century British art.

Dordrecht represents a prime example of the nineteenth century architectural art of Sir Ernest George.
