Robert Genin: Although Robert Genin was born in Russia and died there,
most of his major artistic work was created in Germany and France. In 1903
he left his native country to study art in Paris, mostly under Puvis de
Chavannes. From 1904 to 1907 he travelled throughout France but by 1911
Genin called Munich his home. There, he became a member of the famous Expressionist
group, Der Blaue Reiter ('The Blue Rider') and worked with and befriended
such artists as Kandinsky, Jawlensky and Werefkin. The following year,
Robert Genin wrote and illustrated the book, "Figuliche Kompositionen" (Figurative
Composition) and began illustrating other books, such as Hans Bethge's
"Fruhe Verse" (1922), with his original etchings and lithographs. Robert Genin also
joined the Munich Secessionist movement in 1914. |
|
In 1921, Robert Genin moved to Berlin and became a leading Weimar era
artist there. The years of 1926 and 1927 saw Robert Genin living and working in
Bali. His paintings and original prints of Balinese life and culture have
been compared to the Tahiti art of Gaugin. Robert Genin then moved to Paris
and began exhibiting his art there in 1930. Finally, with the threat of
war looming, the artist returned to Russia in 1937 and resided in Moscow
until his death in 1943. |
|
During his career, Robert Genin was best known for his figure studies and portraits.
He produced fine works in these genres in such media as painting, drawing,
etching, the woodcut and lithography. As one can see in "Workers in the
Woods", his theories of figurative composition played a large role in his
art. In this original lithograph laborers are depicted constructing a wooden
dwelling. Vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines of both the construction
materials and the natural landscape are compared and contrasted to the
working forms of the men. Robert Genin did not number this original lithograph
depicting workers in the woods in a specific edition, but judging that it was printed on very thin, laid
paper and then mounted by the artist on a thicker board, the edition size
was likely twenty impressions or less. |

Today the art of Robert Genin is included in the collections of many
major museums in Germany, France and Russia. The Kunstmuseum in Basel illustrates
seven works of art by Robert Genin in its online catalogue. * |
