Note: |
William Overend Geller was one of the first and most accomplished of the mixed-method
engravers. He was equally skilled at portraits, genre, historical and
decorative subjects both after the designs of contemporary British artists
and after his own work. This particular engraving was designed by the British artist,
Samuel Egbert Jonas. The delightful humor of Military Attack may at first make us
neglect the fine artistry of this large engraving. For instance, the background foliage, with its
varieties of hues and tones, is quite remarkable. William Overend Geller was a master of both detail
and suggestion. |
|
A Victorian era form of art, the mixed-method engraving
represents one of the most technically demanding forms of original printmaking.
Highly skilled engravers would often devote more than a year's
labor to one large engraving, often combining mezzotinting, aquatinting,
stippling, etching and engraving within the same image to produce remarkable
effects in black and white. Such is the case in this early nineteenth
century engraving entitled, Military Attack, where the tonal method of
the mezzotint is highlighted by the lines of etching and engraving. During
the mid and late nineteenth centuries, the large mixed-method engraving
became a dominant force in the art world. |
|
Unfortunately, surviving examples of this unique artform
are now very scarce. Nineteenth century framers knew next to nothing
about archival conservation methods and thus the majority of these important
works have been unalterably ruined by past methods. |
