Note	A twentieth century Spanish and Catalan painter and woodcut artist, Antoni Gelabert i Casas first studied under his father, the artist, Antoni Gelabert Alart. He completed his artistic education at the Barcelona Provincial Council's Arts and Crafts School. During his career, Gelabert illustrated numerous books as well as teaching art techniques and founding schools for wood engraving in both Altafulla and Torredembarra. Many of Gelabert's original prints were created for the art of Ex-Libris designs, including this original example he created for the European Ex-Libris Congress in Barcelona.
	Ex-Libris art requires special talents. Firstly the artist must convincingly marry the image to the word. Secondly, because the work of art is by necessity quite small, the artist requires a miniaturist's delicacy of execution. These criteria are clearly met in this original woodcut by Antoni Gelabert i Casas. "VI Congreso Europeo de Ex-Libris" was, in fact, commissioned by the Ex-Libris Association of Europe for its Sixth Congress which took place in Barcelona in 1958. Glabert used the occasion to create a magnificent image of literature and the book arts personified as an angel supported by medieval scriveners and illuminators at the base of her statue. In the background the old city of Barcelona is finely engraved. This particular impression is signed in pencil by the artist. The signed impressions were published in limited edition of one hundred and printed on a special, watermarked paper.

Condition:	Printed on fine hand-made paper and with full deckled margins as published in Barcelona in 1958. Bearing the full watermark, 'Congreso Europeo de Ex-Libris, Barcelona, 1958', along the lower margin. Signed in pencil by the artist to the lower right. A fine, full color impression and in excellent condition throughout. "VI Congreso Europeo de Ex-Libris" represents a superb, original example of the art of Antoni Gelabert i Casas.
