Note: |
"Although Ogata Gekko did work for newspapers, perhaps his most enchanting
work is in woodcut prints of simple subjects in a style close to that of
the Maruyama/Shijo school, ... These woodcuts, principally of still-lifes
- flowers, birds and landscapes - were printed in a careful, extremely
luxurious technique. They are technically comparable to earlier surimono." *

Ogata Gekko was one of the most versatile artists of the Meiji era. The
Meiji era commenced in 1868 and with it the full opening of Japan to the
Western world took place. Like all Meiji artists, Ogata Gekko was influenced by
Western art techniques. Conversely some of his woodcuts - particularly
those dealing with the Sino-Japanese war - were copied by Western illustrators. |
|
Mainly self-taught, Ogata Gekko delineated all genres of Japanese woodcut art.
Combining strong modeling and subtle coloration, perhaps the most the most
notable feature of his art is the dramatic use of space within his designs.
Such is the case with this original woodcut. |

Twelve Months of Ukiyo-e: November hails from an 1892 series of woodcuts
depicting allegorical representations of each month. November is represented
by a courtesan riding a white elephant and watched by her child attendant.
In the cartouche to the left two travelling priests are dancing with another
child. Subtle printings are evident throughout the image. In the dark blue
area outlines of a temple surrounded by mountains emerge. |
