Paul Gavarni's original lithograph, "Vous etes une Veuve! Vous etes une Veuve! Mais! la Justice! ... (You are a Widow! Your are a Widow! But! Justice!) hails from his suite entitled, "D'Apres Nature" (According to Nature), published by Morizot in Paris in 1858. "Vous etes une Veuve!" is regarded as one of his best works of art in the field of law and lawyers. The image deals with an apparent prosecution of a woman accused of poisoning her husband. Ironically, because she is now a widow she is asking for the court's pity and leniency. Roughly translated, our attorney responds, "You are a widow! You are a widow! But! Justice! Has it not seen at its feet so many times, widowhood! ... still all sprinkled! with arsenic? You are orphans! But! all the parricides! are they not also orphans?" This is a 2nd state impression bearing the suite title, "D'Apres Nature" in the upper margin. As well as the artist's name, "Par Gavarni" within the lower borders, the full title, "Vous etes une Veuve! Vous etes une Veuve! Mais! la Justice! ne l'a-t-elle pas vu maintes fois a ses pieds, le veuvage! ... encore tout ... saupoudre! d'arseme? Vous etes des orphelins! Mais! tous les parricides! ne sont-ils pas aussi des orphelins?" and the printer's details, "Lemercier, Paris" in the lower margin as published in 1858. The scene depicts a lawyer in court wearing the black legal robe, termed as the 'gown'. He is facing right and is speaking to the audience. HIs left hand is raised, the other is on the papers beside his black cap in front of him. This is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the 19th century French artist, Paul Gavarni, also known as Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier. The Beaux-arts de Paris, l'ecole nationale superieure includes an impression of "Vous etes une Veuve! ..." in its permanent collection, Inventory Number, Est 11209. |

Note: | Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier -- much better known to the world as 'Paul Gavarni' -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant he began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. Paul Gavarni's talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the most clever caricaturists of any time, Paul Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age. |
This original lithograph is a superb example of Paul Gavarni's mature style. During the 1850's he was commissioned by the Paris Journal to create satirical lithographs on a daily basis. This gave birth to his greatest Suites, such as, D'Apres Nature "D'Apres Nature" (According to Nature) and Masques et Visages (Masks and Faces). Vous etes une Veuve! (You are a Widow!) hails from D'Apres Nature which many scholars hold in high esteem. In this original lithograph, we are treated to an entire spectrum of both telling and comic scenes and situations when Paul Gavarni's ability was at its peak. Using brilliant contrasts of blacks, greys and whites, the lithographs from this set have long been considered to be among France's finest examples of satirical art.
This original lithograph entitled, "Vous etes une Veuve!" (You are a Widow!) was the 38th lithograph from the Suite Gavarni produced under the title of "D'Apres Nature" (According to Nature). "Vous etes une Veuve! ..." is regarded as one of his best works of art in the field of law and lawyers. The subject deals with an apparent prosecution of a woman accused of poisoning her husband. Ironically, because she is now a widow she is asking for the court's pity and leniency. Most of Paul Gavarni's great art was created in Suite form, such is the case with "D'Apres Nature". According to Armelhault et Bocher, "Catalogue Raisonne" and the 1858 folio entitled, "D'Apres Nature", this set consisted of forty original lithographs, both created and designed by Gavarni under the title: "D'apres nature", with texte by MM. Jules Janin, Paul de Saint-Victor, Edmond Texier, & the brothers, Edmond and Jules de Goncourt, Morizot, Libraire-Editeur, 3 Rue Pavee-Saint Andre, Paris, 1858. The set also included a frontispiece design by Jules Janin. Each lithograph is surrounded by a border. The top border has been broken to incorporate the title of this suite, "D'Apres Nature" in the upper margin. The artist's name, "Par Gavarni" appears between the first and second border under the image, the sequence number, "38", the title, "Vous etes une Veuve! Vous etes une Veuve! Mais! la Justice! ne l'a-t-elle pas vu maintes fois a ses pieds, le veuvage! ... encore tout ... saupoudre! d'arseme? Vous etes des orphelins! Mais! tous les parricides! ne sont-ils pas aussi des orphelins?" and the printer's details, "Imp. Lemercier, Paris" appear below the border in the lower margin. None of these lithographs were signed in the plate. The figures are either half-length or three-quarter legnth, with the exception of number 9 and 31. This original lithograph depicts a lawyer in court wearing the black legal robe, termed as the 'gown'. He is facing right and is speaking to the audience. HIs left hand is raised, the other is on the papers beside his black cap in front of him. This original lithograph hais from Gavarni's 1858 Suite entitled, "D'Apres Nature". The Beaux-arts de Paris, l'ecole nationale superieure includes an impression of "Vous etes une Veuve! ..." in its permanent collection, Inventory Number, Est 11209.
