Paul Gavarni's original lithograph "Les Femmes Artistes, Madame E. de B." (Women Artists, Mrs. E. de B.) is a superb example of his mature style. During this period he not only continued with his fine satirical work but also produced a number of outstanding portraits and studies of French artistic life. Specializing in depictions of women artists, ballerinas and opera singers, Paul Gavarni's brilliant portrayals in blacks, greys and white are among France's finest example of mid nineteenth century French lithographic art. This particular lithograph depicts an interior scene with a young woman (Madame E. de B., wife of Charles Francois Edouard de Beaumont,'Edouard de Beaumont'), leaning against the edge of a piano. There is a painting, a small table and a vase in the background. This impression bears the publisher's name, "L'Artiste" in the upper margin, and, the title, "Les Femmes Artistes, Madame E. de B.", the artist's name, "Gavarni", & the printer's details, "Imp. Bertauts, r. Cadet, II" along the lower margin as published by L’Artiste, Sixieme Serie, Tome Deuxieme as published in Paris in 1856. It is a fine, original example of the lithographic art created by the French artist, Paul Gavarni, also known as 'Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier. |

Note: | Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier -- much better known to the world as 'Gavarni' or 'Paul Gavarni' -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant, Gavarni began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. Paul Gavarni's talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the cleverest caricaturists of any age, Paul Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age. |

(Women Artists, Mrs. E. de B.)": An original lithograph by Paul Gavarni, Madame E. de B. portrays the wife of the painter and lithographer, Charles Francois Edouard de Beaumont,'Edouard de Beaumont' (Lannion, 1821 - Paris, 1888). This portrait is one of a series of images of Female Artists (Les Femmes Artistes) that appeared in L’Artiste, 6th series, vol II, 1856 and vol III, 1857. Madame E. de B. was commisioned for the 1856 French art journal, L'Artiste, France's foremost nineteenth century publisher of artistic lithographs, etchings, & engravings since its inception in 1831. This impression bears the publisher's name, "L'Artiste" in the upper margin, and, the title, "Les Femmes Artistes| Madame E. de B.", the artist's name, "Gavarni", & the printer's details, "Imp. The text on page 267 for the 1856 issue of L’Artist, contains information concerning Paul Gavarni's Les Femmes Artistes, II, lithograph, it reads;
A loose translation for that text reads; -- Mlle E. De B. is the musician that is given to us by Gavarni. She is leaning on the edge of the piano; half dreamy, have smiling, thinking, perhaps of Chopin's melodies and Alphonse Karr's epigram against the Erard or the Pleyel instrument. She is not playing for the world, but for herself, she is casually dressed. She receives no one except her favourite author. The Biblioteque Nationale de France also contains an impression of this original lithograph in its permanent collection, Ref # 1856 (SER6, T2). |

L'Artiste, Paris (1831 - 1904): The Paris art journal, L'Artiste was one of the most-long lasting literary reviews encompassing the visual arts, literature, and music. It is considered by many a most important historical record of French art of the nineteenth century. Founded and directed by Achille Ricourt, this art journal published its first issue in February of 1831, under the title of, "L'Artiste. Journal de la Litterature et des Beaux-Arts" at the address, Rue de Seine-Saint-Germain, 39. Its first vignette, created by Tony Johannot depicted a painter, a sculptor, a writer and a musician accompanied by two women singing. During its long publishing history, the journal was edited by Achille Ricourt (founder/director), Arsene Houssaye (first editor in chief), a post that was also held by, Edouard Houssaye, Auguste de Vaucelle, Theophile Gautier, and others. Each volume consisted of reproductive and most importantly, original prints in the medium of lithography, etching, engraving, and other graphic mediums created by contemporary French artists such as, Paul Delaroche, Tony Johannot, Celestin-Francois Nanteuil, Francois Jules Collignon, Jules Dupre, Hector Martin, Charles Joshua Chaplin, Paul Gavarni, Auguste Delatre, Armand Hubert Simon Leleux, Charles Francois Daubigny, E. Delacroix, Theodore Valerio and many other important artists of the times. "Les Femmes Artistes, Madame E. de B." by Paul Gavarni is a striking example of the lithographic art commissioned by L'Artiste in 1856. L'Artiste published art reviews and literary works by art critics and writers such as, Pierre Jules Theophile Gautier, Charles Baudelaire, Honore de Balzac, A. Houssaye, A. Dumas, and others. L'Artiste later absorbed the "Revue de Paris", another important French literary magazine founded by Louis Desire Vernon in 1829. By the time of its demise in 1904, L'Artiste had published a total of seventy two issues.
Bertauts, Publishing & Printing Firm (c. 1830's - c. 1970's): The renowned French lithographic publisher and printer, Bertauts was considered one of the finest printers in Europe during the mid-nineteenth century. According to the Beaus-Arts – de la Lithographie et des Imprimeurs, Bertauts began printing lithographs after 1826 and established his lithographic firm in 1836. During the 1830's and into the 1870's, original lithographs printed by Bertauts appeared in such publications as, "L'Artiste, Paris" (1831-1904), "Album du Salon" (1839-1844), "Les Beaux-Arts" (1843-1844), "Les Artistes Contemporains", (1845 - 1853), "Les Artistes Anciens et Modernes, Paris" (1850 - 1862), "Animaux et Paysages d'Apres Nature" (1858), the "Gazette des beaux arts" (1859-1939), "Souvenirs d' Artistes" (1860-1876), and other major 19th century art journals of the time. Les Femmes Artistes, Madame E. de B. (Women Artists, Mrs. E. de B., wife of Charles Edouard de Beaumont) was printed by Bertauts in Paris for L'Artiste in 1856.
