Paul Gavarni (Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier): Apart from his satirical work, Gavarni also distinguished himself in portraiture and figure studies. "Gulnare" is actually a leading character (a beautiful Persian slave girl) in the ballet entitled "Le Corsaire", which was first performed in 1837 and revived in 1843. For the 1843 performance the leading role of "Gulnare" was performed by the famous ballerina and author, Mlle. Melanie Waldor. This beautiful Paul Gavarni lithograph then is a portrait of the dancer and French author, Mlle. Melanie Waldor in full costume. Madame Melanie Waldor was the . wife of Joseph Waldor and the daughter of Mathieu-Guillaume Villenave and Marie-Anne Villenave. This original lithograph is a '3rd State' impression bearing the artist's name, "Gavarni" in the upper margin, as well as the title, "Gulnare", & the printers details, "Imp. Bertauts" in the lower margin. It is also signed and dated on the ledge of the wall "Gavarni, mai 37-43" (in reverse), as published for Les Beaux-Arts, Illustration, des Arts et de la Litterature, 1er Serie, Primier Volume, Paris, L. Curmer (Leon Curmer), 49, Rue de Richelieu, 1843. "Gulnare (Mlle. Melanie Waldor)" is a fine, original example of the portrait and lithographic art created by the French artist, Paul Gavarni. |

Note: | Paul Gavarni: An important 19th century satirical artist, Hippolyte Guillaume Sulpice Chevalier -- much better known to the world as 'Gavarni' or 'Paul Gavarni' -- is second only to Daumier as the greatest social commentator and satirical artist of nineteenth century France. Beginning his career as an engineer's assistant he began to exhibit signs of his future genius in the late 1820's as a fashion designer and illustrator. His talent for caricature and satirical art, however, led him to the editorship of Les Gens du Monde in 1835. He afterwards took charge of the influential periodical, Charivari, and was then forced to live and work in England in the late 1840's in order to avoid political persecution. One of the most clever caricaturists of any age, Paul Gavarni's draughtsmanship was without equal. With the greatest economy of line he captured the follies and foibles of his age. |
Gulnare (Mlle. Melanie Waldor): Gulnare is a leading character (a beautiful Persian slave girl) in the ballet entitled "Le Corsaire", based on the poem "The Corsair" by Lord Byron. It is a romantic and thrilling tale that takes place in 19th century Turkey during the Ottoman Empire. The leading characters are Medora, Gulnare, the two beautiful slave girls who have been sold to the local pasha and Conrad, a pirate chief, who falls in love with Medora. The Ballet was first performed in 1837 and revived in 1843. For the 1843 performance, the role of 'Gulnare' was performed by the famous ballerina, Mlle. Melanie Waldor. This beautiful Paul Gavarni lithograph is then a portrait of the dancer and French author, Mlle. Melanie Waldor in full costume. Mlle. Melanie Waldor, nee Villenave (French, 1796 - 1871), was the daughter of Mathieu-Guillaume Villenave and Marie-Anne Villenave. Melanie married Joseph Waldor. As well as being a performer, Mlle. Waldor also wrote poetry, works written by her include "Anna (1833), "Posie du Coeur" (1835), "Poetry of the Heart", and "Pages of the Intimate Life" (1836). | |
An original lithograph, "Gulnare (Mlle. Melanie Waldor)" depicts a three-quarter length figure of a young woman in 19th century Ottoman costume, facing right with head turned slightly towards the viewer. Her left elbow is leaning against a stone wall that reaches up to her waist in height. She is wearing a dark velvet jacket & skirt, with a striped shawl wrapped around her hips, and an ornate black velvet fez (cap or hat), as her headgear. In her right hand, she is holding a short saber, known as yataghan (sometimes spelt, yatagan). This original lithograph is a '3rd State' impression and bears the artist's name, "Gavarni" in the upper margin, as well as the title, "Gulnare", & the printers details, "Imp. Bertauts" in the lower margin. It is also signed and dated on the ledge of the wall, to the left of Gulnare "Gavarni, mai 37-43" (in reverse), as published for Les Beaux-Arts, Illustration, des Arts et de la Litterature, 1er Serie, Primier Volume, Paris, L. Curmer, 49, Rue de Richelieu, 1843 and as described in the Armelhault et Bocher, Catalogue Raisonne, Portraits, page 11, Catalogue Number 72. Melanie Waldor) notes that the lithographs are annotated, "Gavarni | mai 43-37" (in reverse) on the ledge of the wall. The variations in the four states listed are as follows; the first state does not contain any letters. The 2nd state bears the printer's name "Imp. Bertauts" (lower left), the 3rd state of which this original lithograph belongs to, bears the text, (Gavarni | Imp. Curmer, was the publisher/editor many of Gavarni's original lithographs, which appeared in his art journal entitled, " Les Beaux-Arts". Leon Curmer began his publishing house in 1833 and for the next three and a half decades produced some of the greatest illustrated books of the era.
