Paul Gauthier: A contemporary Canadian landscape artist in oils, watercolours and silkscreen prints, Paul Gauthier has earned a substantial reputation throughout the country and has frequently exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists. Besides his formal studies at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto, Paul Gauthier learned the art of working in the mediums of oil, watercolour, and much concerning the art of silkscreen printing from his father Joachim Gauthier (1897 - 1986). J. G. Gauthier was a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy (R.C.A.), the Ontario Society of Artists (O.S.A), and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (C.S.P.W.C.), as well as being a long employed artist for the Toronto Company of Sampson Matthews Ltd. Sampson Matthews was the prime Canadian printer for man silkscreens, including those of A. J. Casson. Powder Run is a striking, original example of the silkscreen art of Paul Gauthier. |

Besides his art for commercial galleries, Paul Gauthier has also received numerous commissions for public concerns including paintings for the Municipality of York and the Scarborough Civic Center. As well, The Canadian Embassies in both Tehran and London, England, own examples of his landscape art. Today, the art of Paul Gauthier is housed in the collections of H. R. H. Prince Andrew, Duke of York, England, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, IBM of Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as many other public and private collections. Both his paintings and his original prints have steadily increased in value over the past decade. |

Along with other honours and awards, Paul Gauthier received 'The Royal Canadian Geographical Society Grant (1987), and in 1991, he received the 'Town of Markham Achievement and Civic Recognition Award for Art & Cultural contributions to the community. |

At this time, Paul Gauthier created at least three beautifully executed silkscreens on the subject of skiing, Country Trailing, Downhill Racer, and Powder Run. They were all printed in an edition of two hundred and fifty signed and numbered impressions. Powder Run hails from this series. An original silkscreen, Powder Run depicts a scenic winter landscape with a skier heading down the the freshly powdered slope. Along with ice skating, cross country skiing, snow boarding, and downhill skiing, powder skiing on the non-groomed, freshly snowed slopes is a favourite enjoyed by many all across Canada and worldwide, in such locations as, Japan, USA, Europe, New Zealand, South America, and elsewhere. Some of the best snow conditions for powder skiing can be found in areas that receive the highest average of snowfall. Although there are many remarkable, top ranking destinations that cater to this sport, there are quite a few small family resorts or out of the way destinations where it is still possible for skiers to discover some of the most perfect powder and terrain to be found. Two of the hottest ski destinations in Canada include Whistler Blackcomb, British Columbia, and Baniff, located west of Calgary, in the heart of the Canadian Rockies. Although it is not the only Canadian skiing destination, a charming ski resort in Whitewater, British Columbia, an area known for its plentiful dry snow and exhilarating skiing has been highly rated as having some of the best natural powder, with steeps, bowls, glades, chutes and tree skiing. |
