Paul Gauthier: A contemporary Canadian landscape artist in oils, watercolours and silkscreen prints, Paul Gauthier has earned a substantial reputation throughout the country and has frequently exhibited with the Ontario Society of Artists. Besides his formal studies at Ryerson Polytechnical Institute, Toronto, Paul Gauthier learned the art of working in the mediums of oil, watercolour, and much concerning the art of silkscreen printing from his father Joachim Gauthier (1897 - 1986). J. G. Gauthier was a full member of the Royal Canadian Academy (R.C.A.), the Ontario Society of Artists (O.S.A), and the Canadian Society of Painters in Water Colour (C.S.P.W.C.), as well as being a long employed artist for the Toronto Company of Sampson Matthews Ltd. Sampson Matthews was the prime Canadian printer for man silkscreens, including those of A. J. Casson. Country Trailing is a striking, original example of the silkscreen art of Paul Gauthier. |

Besides his art for commercial galleries, Paul Gauthier has also received numerous commissions for public concerns including paintings for the Municipality of York and the Scarborough Civic Center. As well, The Canadian Embassies in both Tehran and London, England, own examples of his landscape art. Today, the art of Paul Gauthier is housed in the collections of H. R. H. Prince Andrew, Duke of York, England, the Royal Canadian Geographical Society, IBM of Canada, the Canadian Coast Guard, as well as many other public and private collections. Both his paintings and his original prints have steadily increased in value over the past decade. |

Along with other honours and awards, Paul Gauthier received 'The Royal Canadian Geographical Society Grant (1987), and in 1991, he received the 'Town of Markham Achievement and Civic Recognition Award for Art & Cultural contributions to the community. |

At this time, Paul Gauthier created at least three beautifully executed silkscreens on the subject of skiing, Country Trailing, Downhill Racer, and Powder Run. They were all printed in an edition of two hundred and fifty signed and numbered impressions. This original silkscreen entitled, Country Trailing (Cross-Country Skiing) hails from this series. This beautiful landscape depicts two cross country skiers trailing along a picturesque Canadian winter landscape. Cross country skiing is a favourite winter sport enjoyed by many all across Canada and worldwide. Beautifully groomed trails and breathtaking scenery is available during the skiing season at some of the best resorts and destinations around the world, which include Japan, USA, Europe, New Zealand, South America, Canada and elsewhere. Ontario, for example, provides excellently groomed trails and majestic scenery at such locations as Algonquin Park, the Albion Hills Conservation Area, Muskoka and so many other winter wonderlands. |
