Note:	Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl: An accomplished nineteenth century etcher and painter of figure studies and genre scenes, Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl studied art at the Academy of Munich under William Diez (1878). Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl moved to Boston in 1880 and immediately established a reputation for his etchings and paintings. His meticulous attention to costumes and detailing of his figures earned him the name, "the Messonier of Boston'.
	Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl became a full member of the Society of American Artists in 1895 and was elected an Associate of the National Academy in 1906. Examples of his art are included in the collections of the Boston Museum of Art and in the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
	The American Art Review. A Journal Devoted to the Practical theory, History, and Archaeology of Art: Inspired by the European etched art of James McNeill Whistler, Charles Meryon, Sir Francis Seymour Haden and others, a large number of American artists became seriously interested in the art of etching by 1875. A primary catalyst to the etching revival in America was the journal, American Art Review (1879-1881). Founded and edited by Sylvester Rosa Koehler it commissioned American artists for original etchings. Contributing etchers included such famous artists as Thomas and Peter Moran, Otto Bacher, J. M. Falconer, Robert Swain Gifford, Henry Farrer, Samuel Colman, John Foxcroft Cole, Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl and James D. Smillie.
	Due mostly to its lavish production costs the journal lasted only slightly over two years. The finely printed etchings it produced, however, served as a cornerstone for the many great American etchings of the early twentieth century.

Condition:	Printed upon fine hand made, laid paper and with full margins as published by Dana Estes and Charles E. Lauriat, Boston for The American Art Review in 1880. Signed in the plate (upper left corner) by the artist. Summer is a splendidly printed, early impression and in excellent condition throughout. This original etching stands as a prime example of the nineteenth century genre art of Ignaz Marcel Gaugengigl.
